02 Different Stories
Ok
I have spoken to 3 different sources who have all told me 3 different
things about upgrading the iphone.
1) Someone from O2 will call and offer the upgrade and it will be
posted to you. No in store.
2) On the 11th you can log in to O2 and request an upgrade or do it
over the phone. No in store.
3) Yes you can go to the store and get your upgrade there.
Anyone have anything else ? seems a bit of a mess ?

Thats got to be rubbish unless the only 16gb ones in the country are going to
the Apple Store as they said they would definitely have it and only o2 are
the ones holding things back. Seems o2 aren't very organised and haven't
even worked out how they were going to sign up people for o2 contracts in the
apple store last week.
My guess would be the 16gb one will be in very high demand so it may be hard
to get one but they will still be about.

I think you are right but I think what is happening is that larger
stores will get some 16GB but smaller stores will only get 8GBs. The
confusion is probably caused my staff in smaller stores say they are
not getting 16GBs.
Compared to the AT&T Video onsite the UK are experiencing a very
different week in the run up to iPhone 3G :(

Well the london stores were all claiming that the 16gb ones will be in stock
but they had no idea how it was all going to work really as o2 hadnt trained
them or informed them of how they would be setting the iphones up.
My guess is it will be the same as the last one in the way you do most of it
at home using itunes. The difference being i expect they will credit check
you and register you on a o2 contract in store before you get you hands on
the phone.
One thing which may be interesting to look into for some people getting a new
o2 contract is down grading the contract. My last o2 phone i got a PS3 with
for £50 on the condition i got a £50 a month contract however i was told i
could downgrade the contract to at £35 or less one after 3 months. So you
could get a more expensive iPhone contract to get the phone cheaper then
downgrade a few months later.

"We call it being iReady..."
There's a hilarious deconstruction/pisstake of the AT&T video on
MacBreak Weekly:
<http://twit.tv/mbw>
It starts about 10 minutes in, and goes on for 10 minutes or so.
We in the UK seem to relatively well served by O2 compared with the US
and Canada, listening to the above.
It is irritating that O2 can't seem to give us consistent information
though. I'm in the same boat as many others, wanting to upgrade my 8Gb
to a 16Gb. My local store (Dorchester) said "online only, speak to
customer services" when I asked them yesterday.

Yes my son who has an o2 contract with a Blackberry asked in an o2 store
in Westminster if he could go in on Friday, buy an iPhone and upgrade
his contract, cancel the BB service etc and go. Initially they said yes,
but then had a staff conflab and decided that anyone with an existing o2
contract could not buy an iPhone in store and upgrade on Friday.
Apparently they will only deal with new customers and those existing
iPhone users on the day.
He can however buy one online, but when he pointed out the requirement
to activate in store they got confused and shrugged shoulders and said
they didn't know.
I phoned Carphone Warehouse o2 division and asked the same questions and
got the impression they haven't a clue what's going on.
The phone drone muttered about buying online and activating over the
phone before the iPhone would be shipped out, but he wasn't really sure.
Next Friday could be "interesting".

I kind of feel that way about GPS, but 3G isn't that big a deal for me
(no decent 3G reception 'round here). However, I'd rather wait a few
weeks, so I can let the Internets decide whether it's any good or not.

Like "You can also create your perfect iPhone bundle by adding Bolt Ons
for use when you are in the UK or abroad."
and
"These Bolt Ons are available to new and upgrading customers (excluding
iPhone customers)"
Does that mean Bolt Ons are available for the iPhone, or not?

delivery by courier on the 11th.

Except that ordering page is unavailable: "We are currently making
improvements to the site to provide customers with an even better

They've come and gone.
So much for registering your interest as it descended into a first come
first served!

Apparently O2 have stated that they ordered an iPhone for each person
registering their interest. But were then overwhelmed by the demand, you
would think they might have realised not everyone would have registered
for the updates.

If they did then why did they not reserve the ones ordered for those who had
expressed an interest.
I'm going to try the store on Friday or Saturday. If I get one fine. If not
I'll upgrade my current one to V2 and wait until the supply strengthens.

I think store is the easiest option. I was advised today over the phone to
either phone or use a store as the website wasn't capable of coping with such
high volumes of users.
I am going to ring and if no joy there just pop into the o2 shop next to my
work. Thankfully i work in london so somewhere will have them!
