Laptop that is not widescreen?
I'm looking for a 4:3 laptop. (Why? Plenty of reasons - I'm not going to
bore you with them.)
14 or 15 inch, roughly, decent specs (e.g. not Celeron), not reconditioned,
not too expensive.
What's the best way to look for it? I tried various sites (shops and shop
comparison sites) that had various (useful and useless) filters but not
aspect ratio. Even pricerunner.co.uk that has loads of filters can't filter
out widescreen laptops.

Look for common non-widescreen screen resolutions.

If you find anything decent do, please, let us know ... but I don't
hold out much hope. The price of 16:10 panels has been brought down so
much as a result of their widespread use in DVD players and LCD TVs
that they're now much cheaper than 4:3 panels, which means that PC
manufacturers trying to keep costs down have almost entirely given up
making 4:3 laptops.
The exceptions are things like the IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad X series, many
of which have 12" 1024x768 screens for size/weight reasons.
The annoying thing is that a widescreen panel adds around 400-600g to
the weight of a PC, when compared with a 4:3 screen of the same
vertical size/resolution. Not good for portability.

I sometimes use uk.insight.com ... click "Computers" from the menu,
then choose "Notebooks" from the sidebar, and then the "Notebooks
Advanced Search" button (it used to be easier to find). They don't let
you select aspect ratio as such, but you can choose a screen size and a
resolution in pixels ... avoid the resolutions that you know indicate
widescreen.
.. but there aren't a lot of 4:3 models there to choose from -- more
than half of all the notebooks listed today are 1280x800 (WXGA).
Incidentally: Insight's prices aren't too bad, but you can often beat
them elsewhere once you've found the product you want.
Cheers,
Daniel.
