If you are asking if a bad laptop inverter would cause an external
monitor not to have a picture too, then no. The inverter that I am
talking about is inside of the laptop and has wires going to the lamp
for the screen.

Thanks Bill, then should i assume the video chip is at fault? every thing
seem's to be working apart from the Screen and or the external monitor.

In a strong light, can you see the screen display on the laptop? If so,
sounds like the inverter or the lamp. As far as an external monitor
goes, it usually doesn't work until you activate it through a Fn key
combo on the laptop or through the display properties first.

I'm still worried that it is something other than the video card. The
hard drive lights okay and shows the hard drive is booting right when
you turn it on? Does it make any beeps when you turn it on?

As i say it all works, but the hard drive light only comes on for a brief
second, The hard is working ( spinning ) in other word's the laptop is alive
apart from the screen. I'm not even sure if goes to post? it can't boot to
windows, there's no windows installed.

Wow that could be lots of things besides the video card. It could be a
dead CMOS battery. It could be a dead laptop main battery (try booting
up on AC without the battery). It could be a power regulator problem
(either externally or internally), etc.
No beeps from the computer right? There should be at least one beep when
it is working. None or more than one would be a problem.

No beeps at all, the things that work are: memory (tested) CPU gets warm +
fan, dvd drive, all led's, battery plus charging, hard drive ( spin's ) it
seems the laptop works but no video.

Just a random thought. If you see a flash of light from the screen as
you turn the machine on, have you tried booting from a live CD with &
without an external monitor attached?

Disconnect the screen from the laptop motherboard, and connect an external
monitor, if theres a picture on the monitor then the faults with the lcd
invertor/backlight, if theres no picture then its a fault with the graphics
card. It's as simple as that
