Live CD for old laptop
I'm trying to find a live CD with a built-in JRE to run on an Toshiba
1620CDS (K6-2 475Mhz 160MB RAM).

DSL and Puppy run fine but don't have a JRE built in.

Ubuntu and Xubuntu Hardy Heron thrash away for a couple of hours but never
reach a working desktop.

Any recommendations?

TIA.

Gentoo.

Try Zenwalk - very lightweight, but complete at the same time. Even
gives decent results on 500MHz micro computers aimed at embedded uses :)

Install the distro!

I did it on a 1640 CDT with a CII 500MHz and 160 MB RAM. MDV 2008.0/Gnome
with minimal stuff and an Atheros PCMCIA WLAN card fare very well. But
don't expect video streaming...

Think that's where I'm heading.

Took some time to hunt down a non-i686 livecd of Gentoo. Hangs very early in
the boot process.

Dynebolic hangs while trying to start the X server: "generating a fresh
windowmaker dock"

Downloading a Zenwalk live iso as I type...

No JRE included in the livecd so I bit the bullet and installed it. netpkg
seemed to think it had 1024x768 to play with instead of 800x600 which made
it fun but I eventually got a JRE installed.

The intention was to reuse what is currently a doorstop to give my kids
another device to play Runescape on when their mates came round - it just
about meets the minimum specs. Unfortunately, the resounding response was
'it's toooo slow'. Gratitude eh? :-)
