New box
I need a new computer and the local shop will allow me to run a live cd
on their machines. Is it safe to assume that if the live cd is ok then
the installed system will be ok ?

That may depend on which live CD. But, in general, i'd be surprised if
something worked with the live CD and not with the installed version -
so long as they're the same version of the distribution.

I've used several live CDs on a variety of machines. In every case
where they would run live, they would also install.
