Outlook Express will only spell-check in French
Brand new Dell PC with XP Pro. Installed Office XP on it.

Outlook Express (which I think uses the spelling facilities of Office) will
only spell-check in French: Tools | Options | Spelling | Language only has
French in the drop-down box, whereas other PCs have English (British) and
English (American).

I've checked that the Control Panel | Regional and Language Options are all
set to UK on the various tabsheets.

Any suggestions as to what might have gone wrong?

OE comes as part of XP and isn't normally installed separately. I think even
the upgrade from IE6 to IE7 doesn't touch OE, but I could be wrong on that.

OE uses the spellchecker of Word, it is there that you must set the
default language.

Sure it's not Office 2007? Or maybe you haven't installed the "Proofing
Tools". OE uses the spellchecker from Office if it's installed, but
2007 uses a different system, leaving OE (bizarrement) only with French.

One fix is here: http://www.justlocal.com.au/clients/oespellcheck/
Another is to try out Thunderbird, which has its own spellchecker, and a
spam filter too. Very like OE to set up and use.
