Suspend/Block Internet Access
Looking for a simple programme to block or suspend access to
the Internet temporarily, and preferably with one mouse-click.
Similar to Zone Alarm's "Internet Lock" feature.
I've upgraded to AVG 8 which doesn't appear to have such
a facility.

AFAIK AVG8 is a virus scanner. The ability to block internet access is
usually provided by a half decent firewall. I assume that your firewall
does not do this (you do have a firewall?). I would recommend the one that
I use except that it would trigger a flurry of posts on how it is a load of
shite and how the poster's own firewall is better. Best bet is to use
Google and find a firewall that offers the features that you think you need
at a price you want to pay (even if that price is zero).

I got rid of Zone Alarm when I purchased AVG 8. AVG 8 does not
have a firewall, although the publicity says it has. The installation
I have definitely does not have a firewall. I've put in support
requests, but their response is slow. All I have at the moment is
the firewall in the DG834 router.

The poster's own firewall is always better !

I'd go back to ZA for the features I want, but it did slow the computer
down, which AVG 8 doesn't. I can always switch the Windows one on for
the moment I suppose.

Only AVG *Internet Security* claims to have a firewall; the features table
shows no such claim for either the free AV/anti-spyware product, or the
paid for one.

It depends which version you bought.
there are 1. Anti-virus
2.Anti-virus + Firewall

In Network connections On your start menu or from Control panel just disable
Internet connection Or pull the lead out from the router

That's what I have, AVG8 = AVG Internet Security. It doesn't have
a firewall, or at least my copy doesn't.

Being seriously idle, I was looking for a one-click solution.
Disabling the network connection upsets Firefox; it won't connect
to anything after re-enabling the internet connection: it has to be
stopped and restarted.
I installed Comodo, but its Block All function from the system
tray pulls your whole security level down when you re-enable it
with Permit All. Thence if you forget to go into the programme
proper and reset your security level, you'll end up infected.
It also didn't get on very well with AVG Internet Security.
Possibly a conflict with AVG IS's toolbar.
I'm going to try the command prompt ipconfig /release_all
and /renew_all from batch files.

Should you ever get the firewall working it has a
"Block All" firewall profile.

I have a DLink router and that has a filter setting that states
"Filters are used to allow or deny LAN or WAN users from accessing the
internet or internal Network". I don't know if your Netgear has that
facility but if it has it may solve your problem.

I can connect and disconnect via the router, but that
requires a username and password each time.
In the meantime I've put the local area connection on the
desktop and use that, although it is a bit slow to recover
after reconnecting.

Some fool, I can't imagine who, did not tick the

Reinstall fixed it.

It does actually. Some fool, I can't imagine who, installed
AVG Internet Security v8.0.93 without installing the firewall.
A reinstall fixed it.
