WMP /Gom Player and .MPG Files
What do I need to get WMP and/or Gom Player to play
.MPG files produced by a WinTv card?
Gom will play the file if it's transcoded to .AVI,
but not otherwise.
MPlayer won't touch .MPGs either.

I think you may be referring to MPEG 2 which are what DVD resolution is.
This requires a Mpeg 2 codec Mpg 1 you will have as that is free Mpeg2 is to
pay for If you get any DVD playing apps it comes with them such as PowerDVD
WinDVD ect. No doubt there are some Cough cough Codec's around But I
couldn't possible tell you where

Thanks. I had heard of WinDVD and I think I have it on
a CD which came with this computer, whether a full version
or not, I don't know.
I don't mind paying as long as it works.

If it came with the computer, even if a Light edition, It will contain the
codec you need Once installed youcan Watch in whichever player you like.
That said I dont see why WIn TV did not have them

Another alternative is the free VLC player
http://www.videolan.org/
Plays DVDs and just about anything else without having to faff around
with extra codecs.

Alternatively, just install the fucking WinTV MPEG2 decoder. You can
download the installation files from Hauppauge and select to only
install the decoder.

It seems to me it may well have. After all you can play
back what you record with the WinTV application.
Possibly the other players cannot access WinTV's MPEG-2
codec?

I already have the VLC player, it's the only one I have
outside of WinTV which will handle .MPG videos.
Gom Player is _supposed_ to be able to handle .MPG and probably
WMP as well, but they don't. Neither will MPlayer or (the genuine)
Real Player.
This way you could end up with a hard disc full of video and
audio players, as every video and audio site seems to require that
you install _their_ player!

I'll have a look. I've downloaded and installed the version
6 software, but it seems to me that, if I can play back the bloody
.MPGs in WinTV, I must already have their MPEG2 decoder.
I can use WinTV or VLC to play the recorded stuff; what worries
me is that I shall be unable to make a DVD from the .MPG files.
The .MPG files from my previous FreeCom USB stick (which was a
bloody awful application) could not in any circumstances be made
into a DVD, even when recoded in .AVI !
Video discs and the compact disc system in general are a bloody
nightmare.
