Netgear DG834G problems
The router is connected to one computer via cable and to the other
computer by wireless.

The computer connected by wireless connects to the internet, but the
one connected by cable reports an error:
"Error 797: A connection to the remote computer could not be
established because the modem was not found or was busy."

I have changed the cable position in the back of the modem with the
same response.

Both computers see and can exchange data between them so I know the
LAN card and cable are working.

I have tried entering the modem setup but it reports that "http://
192.168.0.1 is currently unavailable".

What is the simple fix I'm missing?

Cheers
Steve
PS: Not my computer so something may have happened that I don't know
about so any suggestions gratefully received.

I suggest this may be an Internet Explorer error.

In IE: Tools, Internet Options, Connections, Never dial a connection

Thanks Tony,

Yes one of my thoughts, but alas it was already ticked.

Everything on the Connection tab was how I expected to find it, that's
why I'm at a loss that the computers talk to each other but the cabled
one doesn't connect to the internet. (Or to it's own set up program
for that matter!)

Cheers

Could you open a Command Prompt box and type "ipconfig /all" and then copy
what appears in the box, such as the example below.

(BTW you can copy what appears inside the box by clicking on the c:\ in the
top left, Edit, Select all, and then when all is highlit, Edit, Copy.)

Tony

Example follows:

ipconfig /all

The problem isn't with the router, the PC is configured to connect to
the Internet by modem rather than by Ethernet LAN, and as it's
connected to a router rather than a modem it can't establish a dial-up
connection.

OK I'll do that, but as I am not local to the computer in question it
may be a few days before I can post again.

Please bear with me as I'm not ignoring the replies.

That all looks perfect - you LAN interface has been assigned everything it
needs to establish IP connections through a WAN gateway whose interface has
an IP address of 192.168.0.1.

Let's try ignoring IE and just testing your IP connection from a cmd box.
This command will test both DNS and routing: ping www.google.com

This is what I get:

C:\>ping www.google.com

Pinging www.l.google.com [216.239.59.147] with 32 bytes of data:

You clearly have a good connection to the Internet. I am not familiar with
the particular error that IE is giving you as I rarely use that program,
but it definitely does not mean you are off-line from the WAN.

Might I suggest you try using a different web browser, maybe Opera or
Firefox, until someone can help you better than I am able to sort out why
your IE program is sickly.

Thanks Tony,
I'll try to use Opera or Firefox and see if they work.

I presume I can get them over the internet via a freeware site.
