Self starting pc problem
Because I hate those power bricks that stay live even when the equipment is
off, I have put pc, DVD,TV, modem, router etc on one switched extension, and
turn it off at night. Convenient.

Even though I do a normal legal Windows shut down at night, before turning
the power off, the pc starts itself up as soon as power is switched on in
the morning.

Didn't used to do this, just the past week, and nothing has changed
power-wise.

XP Sp2, Foxconn mobo Avast, Zone alarm and MBAm protected.

Suggestions as to cause, please?
Many thanks,

lol

Doesn't fit well with it having started doing it by itself, but a
couple of places in the BIOS to check:

Do you have "start up when power returns" set?
Do you have any "wake on keyboard/mouse click" options set? It's
vaguely possible that a USB mouse or keyboard might be behaving
erratically and triggering this when they get powered up with the PSU.

Okay, it works now. Or at least it malfunctions in all the expected ways.

Spot on - there was indeed an option "Power on after power fail" that was
set ON in bios power management

No idea how, or how switching a pc off from windows constitutes a power
failure, but problem solved.

Many thanks,

It's the loss of standby power when you turn it off at the mains that
is seen as power failure.

When you switch an ATX machine off (either by software or the front
button), it's not actually fully powered down - there needs to be
enough juice around for the system to recognise any "power on"
signals.

If the power is switched off at the mains, then as far as the BIOS is
concerned when power returns, that was a power outage.

Many thanks for your help here. The only motherboard that ever did as I
wanted and expected with regard to power was an Asus P3B-F.
That would pop on in the night, chkdsk and defrag all my hard drives and
then go back to sleep until wakened by the space bar.

They don't make 'em like that any more

Might be worth having a look over of the rest of the bios. Things changing
randomly could be a bios reset for whatever reason, one possibility is if
frequently off from the main and a few years old then your onboard battery
could be a bit tired prompting a default bios when you boot up.

Thanks - good suggestion, but I'd never know whats changed or what it should
be.
Years back there used to be a game of tweaking and overclocking to get max
performance, but faster hardware is cheap now, time better spent
bludgeoning windows into submission - not.
