Need a screw...
(Ahem).
I can't find a source for the fine-thread, cheese-head torx screw which
is often used to mount HDD, DVD and floppy drives in cases where you
release a clip to slide them out. Google has let me down, as has Ebay.
Any ideas? I don't even know what to call them.

That's a great wiki page! However, I still can't find what I'm looking
for. I have a couple of "chocolate box" assortments of computer screws
and although there are M3 screws in both assortments, neither has the
cheese- or socket- heads that these cases seem to rely on. :-(

I know the sort you mean - usually supplied with the brackets etc
(and all too easily lost!) I don't know of a supplier, but how about
filing the top down a bit on the ones you have and then using a junior
hacksaw to cut a slot for an ordinary screwdriver? Definitely a
'homebuilt' solution! :)
Cheers,

Homebuilt indeed! Problem is the ones I need would have a "cheese" type
head which would need building up rather than filing down. Perhaps I
need a welding kit...

I couldn't find what I wanted in an hour of searching, but that looks a
very promising link - much appreciated!

Hi
Have checked my screws box and I've a few - two types:
fine thread - CD, DVD & floppy drives
course thread - hard disc drives
Mostly from Compaq PC's I seem to recall
How many of each do you need and I'll see what I can do.

That's very generous of you! In fact I managed to scavenge enough from
a dead box I had lying around, but I'd like to have a few in hand for
next time. I guess it wouldn't be appropriate to leave you without them
so that I now have some in my screws box! The offer is very much
appreciated, nevertheless. I'll see if I can find a supplier.

Thanks for this - I did check a Compaq chassis and did find four spare
screws as you describe! Implies that Compaq thought they were unusual.
I've also bought a pack of allen-head screws on Ebay in the hope they
will fit - a search for "M3 x 5 cap" brought that up. I've also emailed
Rob's supplier, although they may not want to spend much time on
correspondence for such low-value sales...

Think they were really supplied in case you wanted to fit additional
drives, etc. Let me get this clear: are the screw heads cylindrical or
T-shaped as viewed from the side? Compaq supplied some amcines with T-
shaped screws which were fitted to the sides of drive chassis and
allowed them to be slid straight into a drive bay without rails or the
need to undo screws. The T-shape head engages with slots in the
chassis.
The reason I ask is that I'm in the middle of scrapping an old Cpq
PIII733 server and can save you all the screws if you wish, though
there's a mixture of "cheese head" (cylindrical) and T-shaped ones.

That's certainly how they work - HP machines (same stable) have a
similar arrangement. I'm not clear about the distinction between 'T'
shape and cylindrical - unless you mean that the former have a "stepped"
head. Either way, if you really don't need these screws yourself as
spares I'd be glad to have them, as I haven't yet identified a regular
source, and I do come across the need for them from time to time. If
you'd like to send me your em-add to philipherlihy using the googlemail
domain I'll send you my snail-mail address. Thanks for this generosity.
