Physically getting into laptops...
Hello all... I have an HP Pavilion ZE4111s laptop and I need to get
at the motherboard to replace a damaged item... I have all the edge
screws removed which allows me to separate the keyboard from the main
chassis by about 30mm all round but there are two pillars roughly
above the 'M' and 'V' key which which appear to be holding the final
part in place... For the life of me I can't find the access to these
two screws. I have removed some of the keys in the region but no go!
Can the keyboard be 'lifted away' in it's entirety? Can anyone help
me get into this machine? Very many thanks in anticipation...
Richard.

Any screws for the keyboard are accessed from the underside of the
laptop.
You need to remove the keyboard seperately first. It'll be the keys
mounted on a metal plate the size of the area covered by the keys. There
will be a ribbon cable that'll need disconnecting. You'll probably find
a couple of screws underneath it once you've taken it out. Remove them
then remove the palmrest plastics. You cannot remove the whole lot of
the top as one with the keyboard in place. I'd be surprised if you can
do it without removing the screen.

Dear Conor... Thanks for that... BUT, I just can't get access to the
metal plate, as I said I can only open the keyboard / base about 30mm
and that is putting a lot of stress on these two pillars... Perhaps
I'm misunderstanding what you are advising me to do?

That one rings a bell. I think I used it before for a listed laptop, and
the keyboard-removal process turned out to be totally wrong :-)
Sometimes keyboard screws are hidden under the battery or inside the
memory/CPU covers.

On my Acer Travelmate you don't even remove most of the top cover to
remove the keyboard..
There is a piece of plastic that runs along the top of the keyboard.
That is removed (2 screw underneath the plastic hinge covers.
Then the keyboard just sort of pops out from underneath the main body of
the plaptop.
