Ram issues
I put a couple of gig of DDR in my owd Intel, it doesn't work 845 chipset.

It is the same type of memory in that it is PC400 but is there likely to be
an issue with the number of chips etc?

I would buy some from Crucial but it's about £60 which is too much as an
upgrade for this old box.

You paid for cheap memory, and that's what you got.

ISTR there is an issue with the cheap high-density DDR only working
with a few chipsets, none of them Intel, but ICBM. I expect someone
who knows will be along in a bit.
Of course the good thing about Crucial is that their RAM is guaranteed
to work with your board.

Perhaps you might ask on uk.adverts.computer if anyone there has
what you need?

I did.

No, I (potentially) got memory that doesn't work.
I'm not complaining, I took a punt. One of the reasons I am asking is so I
can ascertain whether it's worth putting it on ebay.
And before anyone comes back on this point I always offer a money back on
anything I sell.

Yeah, most "high density" DDR uses x4 chips, and so does not work on any
Intel chipset. IIRC 8-chip single-sided 1GB DIMMS do not work with 845
chipsets either.

Buying memory on eBay is actually not that risky as long as you stick to
auctions and major brands. The buy-it-now sellers are often trying to
shift a pile of junk.

If its cheap generic RAM, there's no guarantee of it being compatible.
It probably works fine just not in yours.

Cheers. I'll offload it on ebay then with the pertinent info included.

Can you not add the spec/type/model of this dodgy RAM on here - assuming
there is an ID label of some sort? May be able to assist better that way.
