You may want to consider something a bit newer - these things are getting on
a bit in years now (the LJ4 was introduced in 1992) and some parts are
difficult to obtain when they fail - had to scrap mine a couple of years
ago after laser began to fail causing light print (scanner assembly and
fuser are almost impossible to find now). At only 8 pages a minute it's
also far behind modern printers in speed (24 or 32 is now common even on
budget hardware) and newer laser printers often include a duplexer for
double sided print as well.
I'm assuming you mean the larger Laserjet 4 (or 4M - same thing with
Jetdirect Ethernet card fitted) and not the smaller 4P, 4L or 4V
A good alternative for you is the Laserjet 5 (a 4+ in different casing,
takes same toner and some of the accessories but runs at 12 pages/minute)
or Canon LPB8-IV (same print engine as the LJ4 so same toner again).
Even the later HP Laserjet 4000 series are now available very cheaply on
ebay (so is the smaller 2000 series with internal duplexer).

Cheers Nigel, didnt know the ones you listed took the same toners. I have 3
brand new HP Laserjet 4 toners - my current LJ 4 has died on me so it would
be a shame to dump the toners which I could make good use of. So getting
another LJ 4 or another LJ which took the same toner would be ideal.

a LJ4, LJ4M, LJ4N or LJ5 will suit then (not a LJ5P or LJ4P though).
