For free: Sad Macs, Bombs, and other Disasters
I have the 4th edition (2000) of Ted Landau's "Sad Macs, Bombs, and
other Disasters", the best known troubleshooting guide for pre-OS X
Apple Macs (955 pages). I no longer need it so if anyone wants it for
free (or for the cost of p&p if not collected from Edinburgh) contact me
on zhivago at sluiman dot eu.

Have you not heard of 'the spinning beachball of death'?
I recently took a rucksack load of old computer books to the
paperbank. Computer books certainly age quickly, don't they? I've hung
onto my DOS 5.0 manual, though, just in case...
Dave.

This "Sad Macs" volume deals exclusively with pre-OS X systems which
were known to have some stability and other issues, so having a
troubleshooting guide like this at hand was definitely useful. Mac OS X
is a massive improvement, especially the latest incarnations (Tiger,
Leopard), but this book may still be useful to those few who run OS 9
apps either natively or in Classic. Anyway, if nobody wants it within
the next few days it goes to the paperbank.

I've got some old manuals as well (C, Visual Basic, Access) which I'm
reluctant to throw out; however I can find the solution to most problems by a
bit of careful Googling. I should just bite the bullet and free up some shelf
space...

Thanks for the reminder, Hans. My OS 9.2.2 Powermac is generally good but
has been freezing with maddening regularity. Usually it's when I've done
something half-decent in Photoshop and forgotten to hit Command-S after
every single operation. I'd be happy to become the new custodian of your
book.
