WTD: Lenovo IdeaPad S12
I'm looking out for the S12 but with the nVidia
GPU on board. Anyone know where they're available
yet?

I think you mean the Nvidia Ion version. It has not been released
here yet. Despite the W7 release, there a few if any announced. The
only one I have seen is the HP Mini 311, due to be released on Nov 3
according to amazon.co.uk
It may be that the manufacturers are deliberately delaying the
release, not for W7, but to clear stock of current versions that will
be dead in the water once the Ion ones are released.

Whats the point of the ION chipset anyway, so a netbook with a 720p
resolution screen at best can playback 1080p video, so you are going to
connect it to your TV right? and connect an external blu-ray drive,
sure most people will just use a standard blu-ray player or mATX PC with
one. Oh yeah I forgot you might want to play games at 800*600 with
medium to low details, yeah with an n270 CPU lol

Netbook chipsets currently suck so much they stutter playing low
definition flash video from Youtube.

Its a step in the right direction even though realistically there is
nothing you cannot already do with the gma 950 graphics most netbooks
have that you could realistically do with the ION except maybe play a
few games at crappy resolution and details... as long as it does not
bump the price up or have an effect on the battery life then there is no
harm in it, I wouldnt regard it as a major upgrade however but worth
waiting for I suppose so you dont get lumbered with old tech.

How do you know its the video might be the CPU, in which case get a CULV
laptop ie ASUS UL30a 8 hours battery life, slightly bigger then a 10"
netbook only thing it cant do which a netbook with ION can is playback
1080p video, but who wants to do that on a 720p screen.
Or do you think a faster graphics chipset will make the differeence to
youtube playback

Apparently to playback 720p HD Flash of the kind you get on youtube you
need a special version of the flash player compatible with the ION
chipset, whereas a decent CULV CPU ie Core 2 Duo SU7300 1.3ghz should be
able to do it in the CPU alone.

No seriously with an ION you are relying on Adobe et al writing software
to support the ION chipset, sure you might save a bit on the cost of the
laptop compared to CULV but with a CULV everything you do is faster not
just video, for me personally I never really noticed the video issues
with my netbook because I dont play video very much, its not a primary
concern would rather have all round better CPU performance. When my
netbook stuttered on youtube I thought it was the connection but it must
of been the CPU, the gma 950 is a fairly capable chipset.
So nvidia are betting that the ION will take off and everyone will write
special software for it, whereas the CULV is here faster CPU, much
better video playback even with 4500MHD, battery life as good if not
better then a netbook.

They have just been released in the US, so may be here soon. However,
the US pricetag is 599usd for the base model, meaning it may be at
least £400 here. Heck of a markup for no more than $50 for the Ion
bit.

I thought Adobe had released ION enabled HD flash players (or will do
soon). Personally, I would like a netbook capable of playing HD so
that it will be ready for use in presentations etc. I really dislike
lugging a laptop around and want the small size and weight of a
netbook. Add that to the micro projectors available now and the
weight saving is terrific. Also, the ability to download HD from a
camcorder and view it while away from home on such a lightweight
device makes sense for me.

My ultimate device would be a EEE PC 901 sized machine with a Core 2 Duo
CULV 1.3ghz CPU, intergrated graphics would be OK because it would
reduce energy consumption therefore longer battery life and that CPU
would take care of most of the video tasks I could or would ever throw
at it except games and 1080p HD which I never would anyway.
As it stands the closet to that is the Dell Inspiron 11z with the 11.6"
screen but I didnt like the review and it only has 6 cell battery, the
one Im going for is the Asus ul30a with 8 cell battery, its bigger 13"
screen but you need a slightly bigger machine to fit an 8 cell battery
too without it looking ugly.

It was this review that suggested the nVidia would
be just a little more expensive...

The other option, I suppose, is the Samsung NC20

Because the same processor in a netbook with an Ion chipset doesn't
stutter. It was all on Channel 5 "The Gadget Show".

Yes, well flash playback of any kind.
