Going back to when I used to buy and sell insurance write-offs I had many instances of lappy bioses being unable to recognise certain brands of drive suggesting that support for only certain drives was written into the bios.Daren't risk spending the punters money on a drive that won't work.Mind you it was a while ago and maybe not an issue now?

I've never heard of that one before and I've worked on a lot of different laptops in my time. The only problem I've ever had is the front bezel not fitting if you change to a different brand of drive (or different type of drive, DVD vs CD or upgrading from reader to burner, of same brand in some cases) or from drawer to slot loading. Not a problem if repairing a machine for your own use and don't mind the drive looking a bit odd but no good if repairing the machine for someone else.
