FS: External drive case (USB and FW400)
This takes a PATA/IDE 3.5" drive (not supplied) and it has a 4-pin
mini-1394/FW connector, a full-size 6-pin FW connector and a B-type
USB2.0 connector on the backplate. It is powered by an external power
supply that takes a conventional 3-pin IEC line socket as seen on the
back of computer PSUs. It worked OK when last used with a 750Gb drive,
but the small cooling fan that was fitted has failed and has been
removed. The original drive fitted in this case was a Maxtor that went
bad and this may have been due to overheating because of the fan failure
(but then again it was a Maxtor...). Silver in colour with a blue
fascia, not much to look at. It worked fine as an Apple Time Machine
backup device thanks to the FireWire connection but note that it is not
FW800-capable.
13 quid inc P&P, or collect in the Edinburgh area for 10 quid. Maplin
sell a replacement fan for about five quid, or you might have one in
your spares box or you can just run the unit without its outer case
fitted to keep the drive from overheating. See my .sig for contact
details.
