Dell
I`m thinking about treating myself to a new pc, been browsing the dell site
and their pcs come with genuine windows vista home premium. Is this a
genuine copy of the operating system or pre installed with some kind of
recovery disc?

thanks in advance

Pre installed with a recovery disk is the last few I have bought.
Although an OEM copy of vista and their serial works if you want to do
a clean install at a later date.

Nah, my last one was pre-installed but also came with a Dell XP disk -
the disk being standard windows XP (no crapware) but installed without
the need to enter the key (it reads the BIOS). Tehre was also a crapware
disc which of course is optional.
You're right that any generic disc will install though and Dell's
download datavse is excellent and goes back for absolutely years
