Caution: Samsung drive manuf. in China
For some time we have recommended Samsung drives as being the most
reliable.
However, we received one for recovery today - a newish HD161HJ.
It is manufactured in China.
Just a warning - I wouldn't trust even a Samsung drive manufactured in
China.

Is this a well-known troll?
Anyway, Duncan has consistently had trouble with drives made in China by
other manufacturers, so this is a fair extrapolation of that much larger
amount of data.

Thats a bit unfair, I think. He recovered the essential data from a friend's
hard disk and I've no doubt others here have used him successfully.
OTOH unfortunately, _all_ my recent disks have been Samsung (following a
recommendation in this group) so I don't really to look to see if they were
made in China :-)

That measures speed, not reliability.
The Hitachi P7K500 is a very fast hard disk. I've just backed
up a RAID-0 (2 x 750GB Seagate 7200.10, SATA-150, PCI interface)
onto one of them, and I was getting write speeds of 6GB/minute.

Hardly. His comments do show he's a clueless fucktard though.
Considering virtually all PC components now are made in China or its
territories, is the fuckwit going to stop buying PC components
altogether?

So what drive are you going to buy seeing as they're all made in China
now? If you think WD and IBM are still made in the USA, you're a fool.

You might note that the subject says "Caution", so it's just a "bear in
mind" post, there's really no need to fly off the handle. However, the
poster in question is, as far as I'm concerned, /the/ knowledge in the
area, so I'm apt to keep his recommendations in mind.

He may be a little quick to judge in this case but I'm still inclined to
trust the judgement of someone that deals with failing disks on a daily
basis.
'Made in China' doesn't mean they all come from the same factory.
Possibly one particular line is experiencing quality issues, as happened
with the 'Deathstars'

So How many drives have you sent to duncan then ?
Duncan only gets to see broken drives so out of 100000 one drive goes
down and the rest are shit are they ?
what a load of crap
I have a maxtor drive in this pc , had for about 4 years yet everybody
tells me there shit , not once have I had any problems with it and its
running fine
Go search out google archives for the last 4 years and see how many
people had deathstars going belly up then you know theres a problem.
one drive out out thousands dont mean theres a problem.
peace out

Likewise except its maybe a tad older than that. I've got a maxtor in
my parents computer, which was my old one, that must be 7-8 years old
now. I also had no issue with WD when they were supposed to be shite.
An associate of mine HAS sent a drive to Duncan but it only became
faulty after a mains spike.

It's luck of the draw, I still have some old Deskstar GXP75s kicking
around that work, but I wouldn't recommend them, coincodentally the last
few maxtors I've had have all died (including a very expensive server
drive that went bang, and so did it's replacement. Not to mention the
one on my hosted machine).
I used to hink IBM drives were great but the first 2 I bought were DOA.
(first 4GB drives I had).
Got 3 new Samsungs in yesterday, so far so good.

So - why this totally unnecessary abusive response to an expert who is
sharing his opinion for the benefit of many - who may of course disregard.
I for one will be looking closely at 'made in...' and given a choice
I'll take the ones made in nearby eastern countries such as Singapore or
Taiwan.(oh - look at that - a PC component not made in China)

I know, given the choice of getting advice from someone who deals with
faulty hard drives on a daily basis, and someone who says "Well i`ve had a
deathstar for years and it`s OK", I`ll go with the expert each and every

Hmm, Off topic and not 1 net cop stating this fact

What are you selling?
This group is called " uk.adverts.computer" for buying & selling
not giving personal reviews over hardware.
Please remove to home build as a more apropriate group

I didn't say anything because he tends to get abusive himself.

I thought I was the only one who said he has had a working deathstar for
years, but I wasn't offering any advice. I was merely stating that on an
individual basis some drives can last a lot longer than others.
Although I have one that has been working for years, I have had many
others that have gone bang.
Currently, based on Duncans recommendation I have 5 Samsung drives
currently running on my home machines. (HD501Js and HD502Js).
I have also recently as per his experience bought a seagate drive that
lasted less than a fortnight.
My pile of spare HDs is getting quite big now.

I wasn`t aiming that specific comment at you, just making more of a general
point that someone who believes a deathstar to be a reliable drive simply
because they`ve got one of the few that didn`t explode isn`t looking at the
bigger picture.

Unfortunately that`s a risk you have to take with any drive :-) But I would
deffinately prefer to minimise my risks by buying drives that seem to fail
less often than average.
