If a seven year old spare has never seen the road, it needs replacing.

And this is a timely reminder to me to remind the g/f that her spare is 5 
years old, and due to be replaced.  Only a cheap as chips one, it was only 
ever intended to get her to a garage to get a decent tyre put on the 
puntured one.

Rubber perishes over time, meaning there`s a good chance the spare will blow 
out on you at some point.  NOT a good situation to be in :-)

Exactly.  There are no hard and fast rules, as deterioration is gradual,
but any tyre over five years old is a hazard and should be replaced.

So a seven year old unused spare tyre is not exactly a selling point.

Indeed - don't delay.  

This all came to light when a friend had a caravan which didn't get much
use.  The tyres had almost all their original tread, and looked fine. He
knew to remove the wheels and store them indoors in winter, deflated and
on their sides on a wheel stand.  He checked tread condition and
pressures carefully before every trip.  

But one Easter, one of his six year old tyres blew out.  The caravan
turned over on the A38 in Somerset.  Fortunately there were no other
vehicles involved.

I don't think there's a legal requirement to replace tyres once they
reach a certain age, but the consensus seems to be that five years is as
long as they will last and be safe.

One of the many perils of wobble-boxes, as they where known in a previous 
job (where I had to clean up after more than one of them fell over :-) ). 
One guy who had slammed on the brakes when his caravan started fish-tailing 
claimed it was the best thing he could have done to try and stop the 
wobble!!!!!

But it`s scary how few people are aware of things like this!  There`s 
definately room for people to be a lot more aware of cars.  One girl I knew 
never bothered checking her oil, because it got done at services.  I pointed 
out to her that services are >10,000 miles apart, and a car can use 1l of 
oil in 1000 miles and still be well in spec.  So her car could try and burn 
through 10l of oil between services without anything being "wrong" with it - 
and I`m fairly certain a fiesta doesn`t have 10l of oil in it to start with!
