Virgin email problems
Anyone else experiencing problems with Virgin's email service, particularly
when trying to send messages out? For the past few days, when I click the
Send/receive button to send an email a red cross appears in the progress box
and I get the message ...

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Test 2', Account: 'pop.virgin.net',
Server: 'smtp.virgin.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '451 4.7.1
<END-OF-MESSAGE>: End-of-data rejected: ip has temporarily exceeded the
allowed mail recipient relays per day', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server
Error: 451, Error Number: 0x800CCC6A

When this occures, the message is still left in my Outbox. Attempts at
resending will fail a few more times and then, randomly on the xth attempt
it will go. The only change I made to my system lately has been an update
from IE7 to IE8, so whether this might have created a bug I don't know. I
don't want to waste time and money on the phone to Virgin talking to some
zombie, and their free status phone line is running the recorded message
that all is running fine at Virgin.

It's this bit of the message "ip has temporarily exceeded the allowed mail
recipient relays per day" that I find really weird as I only send a handful
of emails each day, so I don't see how I can have exceeded any limits.

Yes, same here. Happened randomly at first but nothing will go today at
all. Probably because I use a Mac and different emailer I get "Error
This message cannot be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it
can be delivered. Sending the message content to the server failed."

No help really but it's not just you who has the problem.

OK, thanks Alec, it's a relief but no consolation to either of us to know
it's not just me. I left a full virus check running when I went out this
morning and it's just completed and reported everything clean, so that's
another possibility out of the way. Virgin's status phoneline is still
reporting everything is running as normal ... yeh right!

Checked service status myself. I think they only admit there is a
problem if it's major and can't be ignored. I have subsequently managed
to send my outbox and it's still (touch wood) going at the moment.

Just had a letter from VM informing me that expert help is available
(9845 454 2222) and how they are happy to talk about anything - yeah
right! I contacted them earlier this year when they stuffed up my
connection and got the standard It's not our end patronising reply even
though the problems started after notified maintenance on the connection.

Not all Anti-Virus packages are equal,,,,

Not saying you have one, but the message you get _could_ indicate a
mail-bot issue.

To be sure, try some of the on-line free checkers...
