Speed Tests
My VM connection has been worse than usual of late and I've been testing
the speed. However I have used two site with widely varying results and
wondered what is a reliable test. Speedtest.net has just given a speed
of 2.24Meg while thinkbroadband.com gave .5Meg. My feeling is that
neither is correct. Any thoughts?

BTW Over the weekend the connection was so bad that speedtest failed to
complete!!!!! Anyone know of a good ISP or does such a thing not exist.

I usually use Speedtest.net which gives me fairly consistent, but crap,
results for my Virgin broadband. It's a bit odd that two different speed
testers should give such widely different readings. Have you carried out
multiple tests with just one tester, say Speedtest.net, during a period of a
couple of hours? If this gives wild variations in readings from test to
test, I'd start to suspect that you may have an intermittent connection due
to dust or oxidisation of contacts somewhere between the phone master socket
and your computer.

I regularly unplug all connections and lightly spray with a switch cleaner
like Servisol, making and breaking the connection several times as the
cleaner naturally evaporates.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Oddly things have been working normally
today so what was going on I don't know. I have often found the two
speedtesters differ and as thinkbroadband requires java I guess it uses
a different method.

You are right, guys. The two speedtests vary greatly. I got 1.2 (dl)
from speedtest.net and 2 from think broadband.
I have investigated Virgin Media's suggested "gofaster" speed of 10
but it doesn't seem to be available here yet anyway.
Has anyone else enquired?

Not me, I'm looking in to getting a different isp but keep finding bad
reports about most.

Here over in Nottingham I have a successful 10meg download after ringing
Customer Services and they increased it for me in seconds, after having
difficulties trying to do it online.

Try news.individual.net it costs 10 Euros a year, works very well and I
have had no trouble with it.
