Adding newsgroups
Hi guys
I emailed support@virgin.net and asked them which section dealt with adding
newsgroups to news.virgin.com and text.news.virginmedia.com
I got a reply from Brijesh saying 'I wish to inform you, we will support our
newsgroup only" !!!
He/she then linked me to 'chat remote assistance, where our technical
support agents will assist'
Needless to say, the page froze and I got an error message. I tried
navigating virgin's help menus and got completely baffled. Does anyone have
a link to the appropriate department or robot?
Ok I'm not an oldbie, but I'm sorely tempted TIA.

It's a good while since I looked but I imagine he means that the Virgin
news server only carries a certain number of newsgroups. Virgin used to
carry their own internal groups as well.
If the group is properly formed and generally available it should be
there. Sometimes you need to refresh the groups list.
A better solution is to ditch Virgin and spend six quid a year on
getting a feed from news.individual.net

Thanks Geoff but most odd. I searched the vn list of groups again today and
the two groups I requested (both Italian local) have appeared!! Perhaps the
message I got from vn.support is a standard bot generated one.
Is it possible that they read this forum?? choc horreur!!

It's possible I may have accidently refreshed the groups list. How do you
deliberately refresh the groups list on OE?

Here in the US, ISPs are killing USENET off by dropping their NNTP services :(
I just subscribed to Giganews so I can get my old groups, so have to use a
"filtered" service.
Better than nowt.......

Anyone out there with techy knowhow. I loaded freebie server :-
http://albasani.net/
I went to OE tools/accounts/news/add and added albasani but when it asked
"subscribe to newsgroup - Yes" I got the following : "OE unable to retrieve
ng's from albasani.net
This would be handy if I could load it, I guess it's a settings issue - help
please.

Oops, it was the settings, I had the wrong port or summat. Albasani sounds
Italian but it's German. They even have their own ng for techy probs. Seems
to work ok and it's a freebie.

Works for this group? I'm so signing up. I'm paying right now just so I can get
to the alt.uk* and alt.2600* groups

I'm using albasani now, I went into synchro groups and saw about 20 odd
alt.2600 groups and a lot of alt.uk groups. I guess they will add a group if
you ask. Use the request form and you will get a reply from Alexander
Bartolich PDQ.
http://albasani.net/index.html albasani is usenet only - no emails.

The n/s with one of the largest ng counts is text.news.cambrium.nl at nearly
200k
http://preview.tinyurl.com/c3msko if you click t.n.cambrium on this link
http://preview.tinyurl.com/2d42cp then "try clicking on this link to get to
server"
it automatically loads cambrium onto your newsreader. I didn't see
albasani.net listed on freenewsnetnews.com ??

Let me guess, did it have the word "Virgin" writ in large friendly letters?
I'm using 4 servers at the mo' including news.individual.net (which also
started out free!!) it's dead handy if one goes clang.

Nah, it was a long time ago now, right after this group was created by a
magic spell Geoff made, that was executed by yours truly, in a not so
professional USENET way, LOL!!! Virgin news service sucked when I was a
customer, it was very slow and half the time I couldn't get a connection. I
wrote their FAQ section for them too, while it was still a "volunteer"
community and before they actually hired support people, LOL!
Their mail was also abysmal. One time, about 2 months after launching, their
mail server (notice, I say "server" not "service") failed because it
couldn't handle a single large volume email.......a send of 1,000,000 emails
to Virgin brought the mail service down for an entire week. Enterprise was
pissed, because the script was on their server, but they couldn't find out
who's acct it was run from. Gotta love a host that will let you
cgi....*grin*
The script was supposed to send 1,000 emails to someone, just to see if it
could be done, but for some reason, generated about a million 1kb emails. It
was obvious that they had no clustered mail servers, or any kind of load
balancing at all.

I'm surprised they weren't done under the T.D.Act for misleading brand name.
After all "Virgin" suggests "maybe" A more accurate name : 'BlackHole.net'
has a nice ring to it?
