An Upgrade
I had an email from VM informing me that they were "doing some
maintenance work on the Virgin Broadband service in your area". Today an
email arrived informing me that the work was complete and I should
restart my modem or router. Well I did and my 1Meg connection is now
running at 2Meg so lets hope it lasts.

Based on my past experiences Alec, I question whether you really have
benefited. You modem / router may be reporting a higher sync speed, as did
mine, but are you actually getting that speed in the REAL world. Try a few
speed tests ... http://www.speedtest.net/

First thing I did Dave - it's reporting 1900k at the moment. Odd thing
is the email talks of an "improved internet connection" but does not
mention an actual speed increase. I'll keep checking over the next few
days as they say it may take a few days to settle down so I may find
myself back at 1Mb.

Re: An Upgrade
I've now noticed that the speed keeps varying between 550k and 2000k
which is a little worrying as I previously had a rock solid 950k. Also
noticed that the router stats now show an 8 Meg connection speed rather
than the 2 Meg it's been since getting ADSL. Don't know what they are
playing at but I think it's time to start looking around just in case.

Pretty much what I experience when they 'upgraded' me at the exchange Alec.
My modem reports a sync speed of typically 6.1 Mbit early in the morning,
but this usually fades away during the day whenever I reboot, and typically
reports 4.8Mbit sync at the end of the day.

This of course is just smoke and mirrors because my true speed is never more
that 1.8Mbit and can be down to dial-up speeds after 4pm, often just
grinding to a complete halt. I assume my limited top speed of 1.8Mbit is
explained by my distance from the exchange and poor quality phone wiring,
and the slowing during the day is down to Virgin's throttling regime and
high contention when people get home from school or work.

Have you noticed whether your upload speed has virtually doubled as a result
of the upgrade? I now typically get 620kbps and I'm told by the 'experts'
that it is almost certainly the result of Virgin shifting my service onto a
Cable & Wireless LLU at the exchange. Don't be fooled, I haven't a clue
what I'm talking about LOL.

Sounds just like here. I've been getting 1900k plus all day but now it's
back to 500k. Some maintenance, I guess I'll have to do everything
during the day.

The upload has gone from around 250k to 370k since the 'maintenance', so
the increase is roughly half. LLU - sounds impressive, had to look it
up. I can't explain this other than to say that when I had a consistent
connection the router reported a 2Meg connection which was presumably
throttled to 1Meg. Since the maintenance and variable speed the router
reports an 8 Meg connection that appears to be throttled to 2Meg. I can
only assume that I was connected via a server used for the upto 2Meg
service and have now been switched to the upto 8Meg server and am
getting the same rubbish service in the evenings as the rest of you. If
that makes sense?

Whatever, I'll give it a while and if it doesn't improve I'm off to
pastures new.

Bloody Virgin! Upload speed is now faster than download and caused me to
loose something on eBay as I couldn't get a last minute bid in.
