What on earth has happened
For the past two days trying to access email, newsgroups and today even the
internet generally has been a lottery. Virgin's telephone support service
is carrying a message to the effect that there is a fault affecting several
ISPs and they are talking to their suppliers and hope to resolve the issue
as quickly as possible.

I wonder what's behind it all. Did someone fail to pay their bill on time,
or has Paddy put a pickaxe through a major datastream cable? Are the
Russians behind it? Is it an international plot to deprive us of
information? Will it ever bloody well stop raining? This and other
aggravating issues are thoroughly ruining my retirement and I want them
sorted out NOW! Grrrrrr!!!!!

I share your frustration though oddly two of my four email accounts are
still working. I get the impression that the email problem my be the
authentication server, it bears similarities to similar problems way
back. News and web have generally been as usual. I note that they have
been acknowledging a fault with email on their service status page
since 13/8. not a lot of help but you are not the only one suffering.

Hope you enjoy your retirement. Took early retirement my self ten years
ago and don't regret it. I did get a part time job in the local college
for a few years but couldn't stand the idiots who ran it and chucked it
after a few years and the onset of heart problems.

Dave,

I notice that the email fault has been downgraded from red to amber on
the service status page. They do say there may be some 'lost' emails
that they are working to recover. One of the two email addresses that
was down is now working intermittently - progress of sorts.

Hi Alec,

Yes it all seems to be working ok this morning (fingers firmly crossed). It
was quite bizarre at times yesterday. I could usually get into mail after
numerous attempts, but my wife, who has her own email account on my virgin
subscription, could not get in at all no matter how many times we tried. It
just kept returning messages like 'account locked' or 'identity blocked' and
weird things like that.

Internet seems a bit speedier this morning too, although that may just be
coincidence.

Yes, re your other post, I am actually really enjoying my retirement. I
left a couple of years ago at the age of 58 with no intentions of seeking
further employment, and that is still the case. I love my leisurely days,
getting up late, pottering around the garden, walks down to the village pub
for lunch, trips out to the countryside with my camera ... it's a grand
life. I now realise just what I was missing all those years imprisoned in
an office killing myself to meet other people's deadlines ... never again.

Dave.
