Terrible speeds tonight. Wanted to run both tests on the BT BB speed test. 
Run the first one then changed log in details for the second test but kept 
getting timeouts... tried for 20 minutes with no luck...

Has anyone used this second test successfully?

Thanks for that link John, I hadn't used that one before.  Interestingly, it 
shows my connection in a much better light (faster down and upload) than the 
ThinkBroadband tester ever did.  I shall use this one over a period of time 
to see hoe I average out.  This morning my 2.2 service is rated at 2124kbps 
which is pretty spectacular.  TB never rated me above 1850.   Hmmmmm.

The Gadget Show is using a customised version of this test at the moment
in a survey of broadband speeds. Oddly the Gadget Show version stalls
after the download test but the original completes without problem.

BTW - Just tested the speed and got 1043kb/s on a FMB connection!

That should, of course, be a 1 MB connection. (IT was befor my cup of coffee.)

I'm on Virgin's 1Mbps ADSL service (phone line, not cable). My speed as 
reported by Speedtest.net is usually up to spec in the morning, degrades 
steadily during the afternoon and turns to solid treacle in the evening.

The BT test gets logged to your line and and the results are readable by BT 
and your ISP. It's the BT test that virgin take as their gold standard. I 
really wanted to get that second test logged as the speed was very bad that 
evening.

In that case I must be fortunate in that I have never seen anything
under 900k even at peak times. There was an article in the paper
recently that implied that BT 's wires have the final say on speed. Also
the Gadget Show had someone on from a computer magazine that had done a
survey who, when asked who were the worst ISP's, declined to say as BT's
crumbling network made speeds such a lottery, or words to that effect.

None of this helps us as you have the situation were ISP and BT can
blame each other and, until one puts it's house in order, can hide
behind each other, unlike the cable customers where the buck stops with
Virgin Media!
