Using "United Kingdom" to refer to Great Britain alone would only have 
applied between the 1707 Act of Union and the 1800 Act of Union .
Post 1800, "United Kingdom" referred to Great  Britain and Ireland until 
1922 when it acquired the current definition of "United Kingdom of Great 
Britain and Northern Ireland"

It has been Great Britain since 1603. The preface to the King James 
Version of the Bible is addressed to James I as King of Great Britain.

But not the United Kingdom until 1707.
