Hi, I hope someone here can help me. About six years ago i signed as guarantor to my son renting a property. It was rented under a assured shorthold tennancy and the contract was for six months. He ended up staying far longer but no new contract was ever signed. Now all this time later after a dispute with the landlord for not repairing the property when asked, The landlord has sent me a bill for £4000 contested rent. Is this legal? Am i liable? Thank you for any help. Andy
Did the "G" have a time limit on it? Did you sign to say you would pay "G" for 6 mths or a "G" that was open ended? They asked for a "G" for one reason only - you know why - now is the reason.

You will be liable only if your son really does owe that amount. If your son was right to contest and withhold his rent then you have the same defence. Why does your son now own the landlord £4,000?
