Work not finished
I had an electrician in to change all the switches in my house from
plastic to brass plates...He looked at all the existing switches and
said no problem however all the switches have now been changed except
one and although I keep ringing him he says he has a problem
finding the type of switch...I have not paid him for the work he has
done...If he cannot find the switch and has to leave the old plastic
switch what comeback have I got ?

Pay him for the switches he's done. Don't pay him for the one he
hasn't done.

Thanks for the reply but why should I pay him as he now says he cannot
get the matching switch....He looked at the job to start with and
said he could get the materials...I would rather he took the lot out
and put the old ones back then I could get another tradesman to do the
job properly

But when he looked at the job he said he would have no problems getting
all the parts...If he had told me that all the switches were no
available I would have chosen another type...

At the time he took on the work the statement may have been correct.
Unless you can show the deficiency is so significant that it merits
removal of all the other work you should pay him for what he has
done, Look up "quantum meruit" for more information.

Agreed, it's annoying for you, but you both accepted the contract in good
faith. I guess that neither of you thought that there would be a problem in
getting enough switches to complete thr job.

Put yourself in the position of the electrician and look for an acceptable
compromise.

You accept that he has done the main part of his job to the best of his
ability.

You accept that he is an electrician, and not a design consultant

Can he find a close match and put the non matching switch in a less
prominent room? With the proviso that if/when you are able to get an
acceptable match, he'll fit it for free.
