Pub in Leith
Can any one help I am trying to remember the name of a pub in Leith that I
used to drink in around 20 years ago. It was located the corner of
Commercial Street and Sandport Street, is this pub still open?

Thanks

My ancient copy of the Edinburgh Pub Guide only shows two pubs near
there - the Tatler and the King's Wark (which is on the Shore so
probably not the one you're thinking of).

If it was called the Cameo it still is. It's attached to La Camargue
(sp?) restaurant. The pub is a great place for lunch.

The interior has recently been remodeled (no improvement IMO) with a
huge big statue of something in the middle.

I'm still racking my memory to uncover the name of the bar, it was
owned by Reynolds?

Re: Pub in Leith
No it was not the Cameo, the Cameo is actually located on Commercial Road (I
remember the Cameo it was always a smart pub with a superb restaurant
attached). The pub that I am trying to recall was on Sandport Street at the
end of Coburg Street.

More or less same location although the bar itself was in Sandport Street
not Commercial Street (the other side of the road from Shore),
www.giulianos.co.uk Giulianos looks like a great restaurant will give it a
try sometime. There used to be a nightclub on Shore. Can anyone remember
this?

Ah, sorry - was it the Black Swan aka the Mucky Duck? I think it might
have been the Black Bull at one point as well. It was frequented by
hookers when the area was part of the tolerance zone. Then it changed
owners and became Scotland's first non-smoking pub, so I started going
to it. Great traditional live music on a Sunday evening now. A nice
husband and wife run the place, very welcoming.

I'm confused now!

Was the nightclub where the Lighthouse bar is now? Before my time I think.

The usual suspects, plus a few guest ales. The Guinness was good (for
Scotland). Also, a surprisingly good winelist.

A little bit of railway interest in the area David. the 'Coalie' is
hopefully still there and the 'road' minus rails is evident.

That was it Bill, remember the hookers they used to work on Coburg Street
and then come into the pub to spend their earnings (most seemed to be
alcoholics in those days). It was like a typical Port pub, it is good to
hear that it is still there and now caters for a different clientele. It is
20 years since I was in Leith so I imagine that the whole area has changed
now.

glad to be of help. The surrounding area certainly has changed, with two
new residential developments having gone up directly opposite the pub -
one leading to Sandport Street and the other on the corner of Coburg St
and Dock St. The Sandport street ones are quite nice from the outside.

atmosphere, no posers, no so-called entrepreneurs, the girls stuck

And in those days the tide came in and out and whisky bond workers

Well they were very interesting, Coburg Street had a notorious reputation
for them.

When they came into the pub it looked like that they were alcoholics and
carried out their profession
to buy alcohol. Today I suppose that they are addicted to drugs.

Thanks Bill, I suppose that the area has now lost it's special character,
now too middle class.

Not really, the real Leithers are taking a back seat, unable to
afford the new establishments..

no. The tolerance zone was shifted out of there a few years ago, and it
existed, variously, along Salamander St, on Leith Links and on an
industrial estate in Porty. None lasted long and I don't believe there
is an "official" area any more, although some hookers can still be seen
along Salamander St., but not in the numbers that there used to be in
Coburg St.

It has and it hasn't. parts of the area have become posh, with expensive
developments, but these sit beside long standing areas where traditional
Leithers live.

There is a divide though - with certain pubs welcoming newcomers, and
others welcoming those with kent faithers.

That's untrue and a ungracious toward the good citizens of
Leith.

How long have you been in Edinburgh? Hardly long enough to use the
term 'used to be'?

Porty = Portobello?

Is there no left ladies left doing business in Coburg Street?, I am sure
that the new middle class residents also need
their services. Salamander Street is too open for them and Portobello is too
far away, maybe if they had moved towards Granton or
Tower Street it would have been better for them.
