Aha! It's largely down to the usenet servers I was using, I found out
by accident! I've been paying a modest amount for access to Agent's
server which has a longer retention time than free servers. They
couldn't renew my subscription because I changed credit cards, so
thinking that usenet was on the way out anyway, I just let it lapse.
This morning I changed server priority back to the free Astraweb
server, and lo and behold, I'm getting all the stuff that I've been
missing!
