Sad Day for Britain?
The world-famous Red Arrows have been banned from appearing at the
2012 London Olympics because they are deemed 'too British'.
Organisers of the event say that the Arrows military background might
be 'offensive' to other countries taking part in the Games. The
display team have performed at more than 4000 events worldwide, but
the Department of Culture, Media and Sport have deemed the display
team 'too militaristically British.' Red Arrows pilots were said to be
'outraged', as they had hoped to put on a truly world class display
for the Games, something which had never been seen before. Being axed
from a British-based event for being 'too British' is an insult - the
Arrows are a symbol of Britain .

The Red Arrows have been excellent ambassadors for British overseas
trade, as they display their British-built Hawk aircraft all over the
world.

The Arrows performed a short flypast in 2005 when the winning bid was
announced, but their flypast at the Games was to have been truly
spectacular.

It is to be hoped that common sense prevails.

Rubbish. They haven't been invited because the Olympic Games are not
considered a suitable occasion for a display of military flying. Even
the Chinese (probably) won;t open their games with a parade of cruise
missiles.

Absolutely. They call it an `advanced jet trainer', but `budget combat jet'
is nearer the mark. Its SP has always been that if you're a dodgy regime
with an uppity population to strafe, gotta getta Hawk or six. There's a
whole genre of such aircraft out there.

Even the Tucano turboprop trainer has got hardpoints to carry
Sidewinders and freefall bombs.

The father of a friend of mine was in the Red Arrows at the end of his
RAF career -- it's a lollipop for flight instructors and long-serving
pilots who will be retiring soon. When he died the then-current Red
Arrows team flew missing-man at his funeral.

reactionary half-wits up and down the country are two different things.

Whether they fly or not, I think the Red Arrows are great, easily the best
in the world at what they do and one of few remaining things Britons can be
proud of, unlike the current shenanigans in Iraq and Afghanistan caused
solely by politicians.

Yes, they exist purely to show off our military prowess and perhaps attract
people to the RAF, but I'd rather have more of the defence budget spent on
that than the billions secreted away on various doomsday devices.

Very likely. But "what they do" is no more interesting than
synchronised swimming, just a bit more dangerous.

Well, if they fit afterburners to the SycroSplashers, and trailing smoke
cartridges, and got them to swim at 200knots, I'd agree...

I suppose we could record the splashers at high speed - more excitement, and
it's quicker too - everyone's a winner....

Not if you removed the swimmer's nose-clips ;-)

IMHO its the danger that makes it interesting to watch, but speed, noise and

Interesting that he would advocate kill-filing you Mike. Especially as he
has been throwing hissy-fits when the droves have been kill-filing him. He
bizarrely claims that by kill-filing him the majority are trying to censor
his input. And now he wants to do the same to someone who has sussed him.

I truly wish he would kill-file me instead of stalking me round usenet and
idiotically replying to EVERY single post I have made in Edinburgh and
aviation related newsgroups.

Ironically the technical director of his ISP ended up `stalking` him in the
groups due to his behaviour (especially re copyright theft) and caused him
to move his account elsewhere!

I think it's gonna get pretty dirty. I imagine the Repugs will play the
gay marridge card again. However there's 4 more years of Yoot who don't
much care who puts which in what hole with whom, and that's going to (heh)
queer the pitch.

I'm hoping Obama picks a female Veep, though obviously not Hillary.
Sibelius might do.

For bonus points once he's Pres, it'd be good to make Hillary a US
diplomat to The Lebanon. It'd be a shame to waste all that experience
she built up making peace between Britain and the IRA, and after all,
she's pretty cool under sniper fire.

Sadly though, it's more likely she'll be put to building a Nationalised
Health Service in the US.

I rather like the idea of Janet Napolitano as a possible VP pick. She's
youngish, "unmarried" (nudge nudge wink wink), term-limited to 2010 as
Governor of Arizona (McCain's home state) and well thought-of locally
due to balancing the State budget in recent years. It would force McCain
to have to fight for his own state's electoral votes (as Al Gore did
unsuccessfully in Tennessee in 2000) and would leave her in a strong
position in 2016 to run for Prez herself assuming Obama wins in 2008/12.
It would also kill the mutterings by the pink wing of the Democrats
about Obama not being "gay-friendly". The Republicans are going to
stroke out[0] over gay marriage anyway. It's one of the booga-boogas
they use to keep their base in line and drive them to the polls (the
Dems have Roe vs. Wade to fulfil much the same function on the left).

>For bonus points once he's Pres, it'd be good to make Hillary a US
>diplomat to The Lebanon. It'd be a shame to waste all that experience

>she's pretty cool under sniper fire.

There's been some woo-woo by her supporters and detractors for her to
get a consolation prize like Senate Majority Leader (she's got nowhere
near the seniority or connections that post requires) or a Supreme Count
appointment (no judge or clerking time hence no paper trail for how
she'd deal with cases). Big problem for her is that if she goes for
something that's ratifiable by the Senate (like a Supreme Court
position) then the Republicans in the Judiciary Committee are going to
be all over Bill's financial dealings since he left the White House, and
they don't smell nice. My guess is she'll ride out Obama's first term,
get a key bit of legislation through with her name on it and then retire
in 2012 "to spend more time with her family". She'll be 64 by then
anyway and waiting another four years puts her into McCain territory as
far as age goes, and ageism is a bigger hurdle than sexism in the States
(although breathing while Black is a lot worse).

>Sadly though, it's more likely she'll be put to building a Nationalised
>Health Service in the US.

It's gonna happen -- too many large companies with big workforces (GM
and Ford, Boeing etc.) are breaking under the strain of paying for
decent medical insurance for their peons, even with co-pays. What they
come up with will be half-assed to start with (mandatory private
insurance etc. looks to be the basis) but subject to revision until it
mostly works. I'd expect a lot of free-at-point-of-use exceptions like
kids (SCHIP), chronically ill people (Medicaid) etc. to be added to the
mix until one day they look around and it's a single-payer system de
facto with a layer of private treatment for minor ills on top.

[0] If I could find someone to give me half-decent odds I'm willing to
put five quid on McCain infarcting or stroking before election day. He
looks like a medevac waiting to happen. It doesn't need to be fatal to
take him out of contention and it would be just like throwing chum into
the Republican Party's shark pool. I could sit back with a bucket of
popcorn bought with the winnings and enjoy the carnage.

That's not exactly answering the question. I happen to think Vancouver
Airport is the best I have ever seen, but to call myself a 'fan of an

Just as well. If the authorities caught you with those pictures, you'd
get 42 days without charge and an interview with Jacqui Smith. You'd
never look at your favourite terahertz scanner in quite the same way again.

He'd never look at Jacqui Smith in quite the same way again, but most of
us don't anyway.

What matters is the answers. I once knew a writer who liked to write
in travel terminals such as railway stations and airports.

I've just seen some people standing by the "Trams will be here. No, really"
signs and getting photographed. I guess they already have a favourite tram
stop.

Ah, but as well as having a favourite tram stop, you need to cultivate
an irrational hatred of a nearby tram stop.
