Given the hot weather overe the weekend it's probably the first time
i've had the air con on for any decent length of time for about 2
years.  Everthing still works ok and it cools the car down brilliantly
but it's not half noisy from the outside.  I always remeber it sounding
like a big fan was going whenever the A/C was put on but now it's a
squeaky rattling sort of noise coming from the pump.

Not knowing anything at all about A/C i don't really want to start
messing with it.

Anyone got any opions on a quick fix, is it just likely to be something
thats a bit stiff after not being used in a while?

Could be the bearings in the compressor are a bit dry. It *may* clear after 
a bit of use, however it may also mean you need a new compressor soon. And a 
re-charge of the gas afterwards.

Are you sure the nose is coming from the compressor and not the electric 
cooling fan?
