expect to pay at least 300 quid for the whole job from an independent. 600
from a main dealer.

I have done one of these on a 306 in 4 hours.
We charge 35.00 per hour inc VAT.

Just a thought also.
Either the matrix has failed itself or something has caused it to fail.
Possibly a head gasket problem which might be leaking compression pressure
into the cooling system. Might be worth while getting it checked out as we
have come across this before.

4 hours? Is that a proper dash-out job then? Heater matrix on my old
Carlton sprung a leak and the Haynes BOL told me that I had to remove the
pedal board, including pissing about with all the associated rods/cables
etc., to get to it - I managed by just fully depressing the clutch pedal,
and it gave it enough room to slide out. Piece 'o' piss.
What followed wasn't too clever though. To start with I didn't have the
patience to properly seal it up at the joint, so I gave up on that and
bypassed it until I had a day with more time. Then, the fact that I didn't
know how to properly fill a cooling system meant that there was probably an
airlock in the system, which in the end resulted in a fubar engine. Still,
it had about 230k on the clock and it only stood me in around 200 including
getting it MOTd and bits for the MOT, and I got 8000 miles out of it, so not
too sad really.

Also, are you in the North Surrey/South London area, and only charging
35/hour inc. VAT??? Blimey, you must be kept busy!

I think my 306d has a leaky heater matrix , I'm intrigued by your post.
How on earth did you determine that the head gasget leaking could have
caused a problem with the heater matrix ? I mean the whole system is
protected from being over pressurised by the cap on the coolant bottle
isn't it ? Surely a hose would pop off or burst before metal pipes in a
heat exchanger gave way !
I can't think why mine would have failed ( if it has )but I know they
do fail.. I though I was just unlucky !
