Car Breakdown cover
Looking for cover that includes transport to home or destination not
to a local garage. AA have upped the price again so not to keen on
them. RAC seem OK but I did hear there are cheaper places to get it
from.

Any recommendations from people here ?

Thanks

Ask your insurer. I have breakdown cover included in my car insurance
for a very small increase in cost. They will only transport the car home
or on to my destination if they can't fix it quickly, but that's pretty
standard. I've only used it once when they called out a local garage who
fixed it - all very efficient, so haven't tested them to the full.
Unlike AA or RAC, it's the car, not the driver that's covered. So no
good if you're in someone else's car.

If you get a deal through your insurers, make sure you check exactly what
you are getting, most included deals don't have take you home cover.

There are many different companies offering breakdown cover now, and with
the exception of the AA* and RAC* they all use local garages rather than
their own staff to provide the service. Simply go for the cheapest one, the
service will be provided by the same garages anyway, so the level of service
will be the same.

*With the AA, you have a 50/50 chance of being attended by a contractor, or
by a AA patrol.
*With the RAC, you have a 99% chance of having their own patrol attending
for roadside repair, but if transport is needed it will be a contractor.

Mine does, from anywhere within Europe. It seems excellent value, though
as I said, I haven't really put them to the test.

I'm with Britannia and have had no problems when using them. If you're in
Unison you can get a discount too. Let me know if you want to use them by
removing "my nuts" from my email address as I'll get a 5 discount ;-)

If you dont mind paying at the time of breakdown the claiming it back
you could try Autoaid who are backed by Boncaster insurance. It costs
£29.00 per year and you can ring them on 01277 720700 for details as
they haven't got a web site. You can ring them for recovery or use a
local garage pay, them buy credit card then get the money back. I
personally haven't had to put them to the test but my friend who
recomended them to me has and he was very impressed.

Hi Borg,

Just left the RAC after 23 years and signed up with Britannia Rescue through
my union Unison. I got a 20% discount for that and the cover consists of
basically:

Home Call
Rescue and Recovery
Personal cover for my wife and self

All for the sum of 116 - (with the 20% discount)

Here's the link if you want to have a look:

Try your bank.

Seriously.

Some of the 'premium' (aka. fee paying) bank accounts come with stuff
like this.

MMM interesting. tried Euroquote but they wont cover my Trike so there
out

Direct Line and Green Flag are the same company and wanted 120 but
won't cover the Trike as it's older than 16 years.

RAC covers any vehicle for 77 but not Eire :( I go there quite a lot
as it's nearer to me than England.

AutoAid seems to be a pain now looking at the forums. You pay the
costs then you claim it back :( not happy about that so it looks like
the RAC are the winners for me as they will cover my car, trike and
trikavan.

Thanks

Holy cow! My insurance premium is only 130quid with Rescue and Recovery
included.

They are good for the price but the OP wanted cover for the person and ANR
only covers the car.

Be interesting to see the level of cover for that.

I could have got it cheaper by covering the car only, but I chose to have
'personal' cover for my wife and self which increased the premium, but
Britannia will 'rescue' us in any car - even as passengers!

It's the same with my car insurance, I can get cover for at least 100 -
120 less, but in no way will it offer the same level of cover that I have
now, and once I start adding that level to the new insurance quote, the
quote invariably ends up over 50 MORE than I am paying now - and that's
using the on-line companies like E-Sure, Churchill, More Than etc.

It all adds up really to one phrase. "You get what you pay for" - in my
experience, cheap premiums, usually means problems when you have to make a
claim (although there are exceptions to the rule).

I have my car insurance through Frizzell's and have done so for the last 25
years, but whenever I have made a claim - my fault or not - I have never had
any problems with the settlement (most have been sorted within 3 - 4
weeks) - prior to that, I used various 'cheapies' and changing companies
every year - and some of the problems that I had then when I 'made a claim'
were horrendous.

It's for the car not the driver - we have two cars covered seperately
with the same broker (Footman James). Cover looks a pretty standard
European rescue and recovery deal. No home start.
The above price is an unlimited mileage, fully comp, agreed value,
classic policy for a 2 litre Triumph Vitesse.
The Passat is on a modern policy for a couple of hundred quid. Also
fully comp, though I'll probably drop it to 3rd p, f&t next time.

Footman James are 'specialist' rather than 'cheap'.

Yup, I've had that too in the past. Worst was when someone insured by
the same company as me (Bradford & Pennine) crashed into my car. That
should have kept things simple, but they dragged it out for months.
