Ton's Keswick today
http://www.lakelandcam.co.uk/
Have you seen how there is always something going on in Keswick, busy little
town. I wonder how many people have found their chosen one in this little
town. Do you think there's a lot of romance there. ? Do you think tourists
go there to find their other half? Maybe they are looking for a Cumbrian.

It's the wrong place to go if you're looking for a Cumbrian. Most of the
residents are incomers. They'd be better off searching in Workington.

Being an incomer does not necessarily mean that one has no Cumbrian
ancestry/connections.
I guess a lot of the Workington people are there because of the (rapidly
disappearing) work in the past - and so are not Cumbrians either.

Most people in Britain, if they could trace their ancestry back far enough,
would find some incomers, I suppose. Vikings, Irish (Scots),
Angles-Saxons-and-Jutes, Normans, Italians, Poles, Carribeans, Pakistanis,
Africans, .... the list is endless. Sadly I can't find anything more
interesting than a few Irish people to add to my long Scots lineage, but who
knows where those Scots came from originally?

That sounds strange. You have a whole continent, a whole world to chose from
and you say the Scotes came from a little island called Ireland. It seems so
unreal, Edgar.

Yes. I think they were.
I seem to remember that John Buchan wrote an odd short story about the last
of the Picts. A mountain collapsed on them or something outlandish like
that. It wasn't very friendly towards Picts I think.
The Picts seem to have been in the east of Scotland while the Scots came
into the south west.
But I think Edinburgh was in Northumbria once so you could be a Dane!
It's great to think back and consider where our families originally came
from. But I wonder how realistic our ideas are.

My family aren't from Edinburgh originally. A few generations back some were
from Leith (which is now part of Edinburgh but was a separate burgh back
then) but many came from Highland Perthshire while others came from the
Lothians and Ayrshire. If you'd ever seen me, Edgar, you'd never suspect
Danish blood! I've been led to believe my short, stocky, build with a hardy
constitution and dark hair and eyes are more Pictish than anything else. So
the Ayrshire lot (my father's side) may be Scots but the others from
Perthshire and the Lothians were probably Picts.

It is, and the fancy pieces in the cafe are pretty good too. We visited
just before we left for the States, and there was a torchlit procession
celebrating the Midsummer. I've got photos somewhere.
It was a farewell to the ancestral roots.

It would certainly seem that way. My own surname comes from a French
city of exactly the same pronunciation but significantly different
spelling, and it would appear that my great, great, great -- and so on
-- grandfather came across with William-the-Conker-Player and was such
a good chap that the said William gave him lands in Durham.
I like to think that a hefty proportion of my other genetic bits and
pieces are Scandinavian -- both before and after the Normans' vacation
trip to north of the Channel.

Wish I could do that with my Philadelphian cousins, but it's several
generations too late. All I know is that some cousins of my grandfather's
emigrated to Philadelphia towards the end of the 19th century or the
beginning of the 20th. They didn't return to Scotland, so presumably they
either all died or they stayed on, reproduced and started a dynasty in the
US. I guess if I really made the internet work for me I might be able to
trace them now, but I simply don't have time. We probably wouldn't even like
each other anyway.....
