NOKs 195 per kvadrat meter. 4000 NOKs for both verandas. = 333,- give or
take a penny. They're spreading a membrane on Tuesday next week. When it
dries I must have it covered with either plastic grass mats which I hate, or
2nd alternative Bergo floor which seems very durable and looks nice too.

Edith-cancelled her dentist appointments for a year ahead.

I eventually got the dentist bill for the tooth that nearly kept me from
coming to England. It cost more than the flight.

You should have done it in England. I
ve started getting my eyes sorted and buying my frames there. It's a 1/3 of
the price here and they do a better job.

I dunno. The dollar rate makes the UK very expensive for me. Also,
National Health Dentists were like hens' teeth back in '92 when I
returned to the UK from Holland, and I wouldn't expect a molar crown to
cost less than three hundred pounds. I paid about half that, once my
insurance was deducted. I get fairly much state of the art treatment
here. The NHS wouldn't do a root canal at all.

My glasses come from a marvellous optician, who has a limited range of
frames but who can rustle up a pair of bifocals for the equivalent of
forty GB pounds. I note that top brand contact lenses generally cost
standard retail or online in dollars what the British customer pays in
pounds.

(I cannot emphasise strongly enough what a bonanza British shoppers can
find here in clothing (jeans), music, books (particularly professional
manuals, even with tax!) fragrance,(especially Clinique) and footwear,
especially at the discount stores. And petrol is still only a little
over a pound for a US Gallon, despite the whinging from the gas guzzler
brigade.)

Not here either. It's only when you are really down and out that they help
you except for extractions-they pay for THAT, bong! It's a system called
Folketrygd. When you have paid out a certain amount to doctors/hospitals you
get free treatment. Trouble is, they keep upping the amount so I never get
there so I pay and pay. There's a method in their madness, my Mam would have
said.

I bought 3 pairs of glasses the one year here. It cost me 1538: 46. My
specs never cost less than 500,- even when I pick out the cheapest
distatsful frames that usually fall to bits by the time I need new specs.

I noticed that. I bought jeans in a retail store near the big bus station in
NY city back in 79, I believe it was and got a good bargain even then.

That would be the Port Authority, on 42nd Street, just round the corner
from Times Square and Broadway. Yes, jeans are a must! Old Navy's the
best bet for a basic pair, but even DKNY is still a bargain for those
who want a designer label.

I've bought several things mail order from the USA since the exchange rate
has been in our favour. Even adding on the postage, customs charges and VAT
you can still save a fair bit. I've had books, CDs, a nice 2nd hand wooden
tenor recorder, some unusual fabric, patterns for our Georgian Fair costumes
and various other things.

Denims. It was a German (innvandre) emigrant started the whole affair with
his strong woven material.

Orlando has ordered music thingies from the USA. Much cheaper than here.
