You mean we've progressed from semaphore?
(And to think that I only came to America to learn the art of smoke
signals!)
But -- jesting aside -- I'll be as interested to read any responses as
will Paul.

I'd be surprised if there were any hotspots at all... but you never know.
Maybe in the centre of Kendal or something?

Many of the national chains like McDs etc are starting to offer it. Of
course several tens of square miles of Alston Moor is a "hot spot",
though I'm not sure how one would go about getting access.

We stayed in one of the biggest worldwide chains last weekend, and they
had wireless. Mr P managed to find a signal with his notebook. The fee
was $10 a day and would probably be ten quid in Britain, which isn't bad
if you really need it. We were required to register and submit our room
number. We didn't take them up on this. How do they know who it is?
Surely we could put any old room number, and then bu99er off. Would it
work if you just breezed in to the lobby lounge or the bar?

I wouldn't take an abacus in half of those places, never mind a lap-top!

I'm delighted to hear you haven't come across it, Edith. It's up at Derwent
Howe, near your parents' old area. The smell of greasy meat being cooked is
quite offputting when you're shopping. (Well, if you're a vegetarian it is,
anyway.)

It'll be about where Berry Street allotments were.

That's awful. I remember Berry Street and the allotments. Walking down the
street at night with Derek and Percy and another girl from Brierydale, Percy
saying "Don't look now but I think we're being followed." and ofcourse we
all turned around in panic and there was nowt but a la'al white dog walking
along behind us. We all burst out in laughter. It was one of those prime
moments that never return. All the houses front doors faced the allotments.
There wasn't much growing there at the time. I remember a couple of ponies
and the gas tanks. There was a hall down there where we used to go dancing
and my Mam took sewing lessons there, too. I can't remember the name of it.
Reminiscingly, Edith.

It's sad when your old memories are obliterated. I just discovered that my
old primary school in Edinburgh is being turned into flats. They've built a
lovely new school building in the field at the back, but wandering round the
old building is so sad - so many memories, not just from my own time there
but from my son's years at the same school. We both thought it would be
there forever, and maybe his own kids would go there one day and play in the
same playground. Oh well, I'm sure the new one is much better....

Well I just spent a few days in Edinburgh (I lived there for a long
time) and found it very hard to "see" much of the Edinburgh I remember
so well - just paid the inevitable parking ticket off as well!

That's why I'm so glad Cumbria is protected by The National Trust etc,
Gordon. I can go back time and time again and still find The Lake District
safe and sound. Otherwise, lots of thing have changed for the worst but they
are trying to correct mistakes made in the past, at least the ones that can
be corrected.
Hello. Who are you? Off to browse your home page.

Heh. I used to collect parking tickets when I visited Cumbria from
Edinburgh. It's the unfamiliar places that cause the trouble. You think
you've grasped the local parking regulations properly, but it's only when,
with gritted teeth, you're unsticking that parking ticket from your
windscreen that you realise you completely misunderstood.
My son now lives in a part of town where parking is free, but it's still
only about a 20 minute walk to the city centre, so I just leave my car at
his house all day and walk everywhere. It's wonderful. I dread the day he
moves. When I stayed with him in the past I used to have to leap out of bed
really early and move the car away from his street, or buy tickets from the
machine before breakfast, and then I'd be stuck with the problem of what to
do with the car all day if I went into town.
The old bits of Edinburgh are mostly still there, but many places are hidden
behind big shiny new buildings with round bits on them. It is an
improvement. Mostly I don't mind. I grew up in a tatty, down-at-heel city
with loads of empty sites - "holes in the ground" as they were known - where
no-one could afford to build. Now it's a thriving, bustling, wealthy
European capital. Even the weather has improved. ....Just a shame I can't
afford to live there anymore....
