Mebyon Kernow
While I support a united British nation and tend to think that Scottish,
Welsh and indeed English nationalisms are a waste of time and unnecessary
distractions, surely none can beat Mebyon Kernow for "Passport to
Pimlico"-ism.

"Simpsons cry freedom for Cornwall
The Cornish language and the campaign for Cornish self-government has gone
global with the announcement that a character in the American cartoon series
'The Simpsons' is to 'embrace the cause of Cornish independence.'
In a special edition of the animated comedy, Lisa Simpson will run around
the family home waving a Cornish flag and shouting 'Rydhsys rag Kernow
lemmyn' - Freedom for Cornwall now.
The cartoon will be screened as an alternative to the Queen's speech on
Christmas Day.
The story was carried worldwide. The Sydney Morning Telegraph headline
stated 'Simpsons cry freedom for Cornwall,' Malaysia's Utasan declared 'Lisa
Simpson takes up the call for Cornish liberation' and the Scotsman led on
'Cartoon character to voice support for Cornish independence.' It was also
covered by CNN, Sky News and a host of British television and radio
stations, with the BBC declaring that 'Lisa puts cool into the Cornish
cause.'
It was interesting to note that the non-British media added some interesting
perspectives to the wider context of the story. Reuters stated that '.
bordered by water on three sides, Cornwall has remained stubbornly distinct
from the rest of the United Kingdom. Nationalists in the county think the
area should be accorded the status Wales and Scotland enjoy, having devolved
powers if not outright independence.' Malaysia's Utasan, based in Kuala
Lumpar, referred to Cornwall's separate culture, identity and language, as
well as the 'claim that there are constitutional doubts as to the legitimacy
of English rule in Cornwall.'
Of the London papers, The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily Mirror, The
Daily Mail and The Times all covered the story. Predictably, The Sun managed
to come up with the headline 'Simpsons get corny.'
None of these papers managed any serious commentary on the future prospects
for the Cornish language or the campaign for a Cornish Assembly. That was
not surprising.
The campaign for a Cornish Assembly has, so far, been largely ignored by the
London press. Even in 2001, when evidence for 50,000 declarations was taken
to Downing St, the campaign met with complete metropolitan indifference. The
event was only covered by one London paper - the Morning Star. One newspaper
journalist had stated, in an email, 'this is probably the most significant
political story to have come out of Cornwall in decades .' His publication
however, along with all the other newspapers and magazines failed to cover
the story.
And yet, when it is reported that a cartoon character is going to wave a
cartoon flag and utter a phrase in Cornish, there has been a media furore.
What a stark contrast to the lack of serious reporting of Cornish political
issues.
Mebyon Kernow welcomes the publicity surrounding the Simpsons, which will
raise the profile of Cornwall's culture and political aspirations.
But we would also welcome a press that takes Cornwall and Cornish
aspirations seriously."

"MK makes Commonwealth Games demand
Mebyon Kernow member Graham Hart is pressing for the Celtic nation of
Cornwall to be officially recognised by the Government in time to
participate at the next Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, in 2006.
Speaking from his home in Camborne this week , he said:
"As far as I am concerned, Cornwall is a Celtic nation, with its own
identity and traditions just like Wales and Scotland. The time has come for
Cornwall to stake it's rightful claim. That is why I am actively involved in
campaigns to win greater recognition of Cornwall as a distinct entity.
"In 2006, the XVIII Commonwealth Games will take place in Melbourne,
Australia. Among the 71 'nations' taking part, there will be contingents
from Scotland and Wales, as well as teams from smaller countries such as
Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man. Let's do the correct thing and make it
72. Why shouldn't there be a team representing the historic nation of
Cornwall?
"What a fantastic opportunity for our sportsmen and women. And what a
fantastic spectacle for all the people of Cornwall. Every four years, our
sporting best representing Cornwall at one of the greatest sporting
showcases in the world. Can you imagine the excitement it would bring?" Mr
Hart asked.
Graham, a keen sports follower, wants to see Cornish teams and individuals
playing representative sport at the highest possible level. He has spent a
lifetime in Cornish football as both a player and a coach. He has also
campaigned for the raising of standards at all levels.
Mr Hart also commented on the flagship of Cornish sport - the Cornwall rugby
team.
"The Cornish rugby team has always been the flagship of Cornish sport - and
thousands of us have fond memories of the Twickenham finals from 1989 to
1999. Cornish rugby is thriving at the present time with the Pirates in
National 1 and Launceston, Redruth and many Cornish teams doing extremely
well.
"But events show that the County Championship is not a priority for the
RFU - with only Cornwall having any sort of meaningful network of support
from spectators. Why shouldn't Cornish players aspire for the Cornwall team
to play at a higher level?
"In the recent 2003 Rugby World Cup, Samoa (population 187,000) and Tonga
(112,000) both took part. And in football, there are the tiny Faroe Islands
(47,000) who are beginning to achieve some remarkable results.
"Cornwall needs a considered and serious debate on the future of
representative sport."
Graham Hart has written to the Government Sports Minister Richard Caborn and
is currently in the process of contacting high profile past and present
sportsmen and women and various sports associations from Cornwall to gain
their support for his campaign for Cornish sporting recognition.
"I feel sure the people of Cornwall will relish this campaign" he added."
"Conan Jenkin and Hilda Wasley, MK PPCs for Truro & St Austell and Falmouth
& Camborne respectively, have both given their support to Mr Hart's
campaign. In a joint statement issued today, they said:
"Cornwall has a proud sporting history. We support Graham Hart's campaign to
improve the level to which Cornwall teams and talented individuals can
aspire.
"It would be fantastic to see the Cornish flag proudly flying alongside
other British and European flags at events such as the Commonwealth Games."

Gotta love this quote;
"The Cornish have played a very positive role in history and have much to be
proud of. Not every culture can claim that. In fact, very few. Very few
cultures other than the Cornish have earned worldwide respect."
