Buses on princes street
<Delurkety>
Was cycling westbound on princes street today, about to turn right
across the east bound traffic. I looked at the oncoming
traffic, seen a bus coming towards me a reasonable distance away, took
my usual 'just in case' second look over my shoulder, looked ahead
as I was about to start my turn and - slammed the brakes on.

I was truly shocked at how much closer that bus was. It was
shifting. If it was within 30mph as it thundered by, I'm a
chocolate fireguard.

I'm actually for the car ban, and don't have any problems with
speed cameras.

I would like to see someone in the council with some common sense
(!), put two and two together, and stick a couple on princes street.
Oddly enough a place with a large amount of pedestrians and
cyclists next to large heavy speeding vehicles might be a good
place to put a couple? Perhaps with a 20mph limit?

I don't think I'm being too melodramatic or tabloid to say this
wee drag track is a messy accident or two waiting to happen.

PS I don't think this was an LRT bus. It was single decker, and
from what I remember vaguely blue and yellow. With a bit
of red shift.

PPS I noticed something about this in the evening news today.
For once, it pains me to say, I agree with it.

Remains of the last cyclist the bus passed?

Phil Barker popped their head over the parapet saw what was going on

But, Shirley, the point of removing the cars was so that the buses
COULD go faster (albeit within the speed limit). Would you not be safer
with the congestion?

Thought Princes St was a 20MPH limit (maybe it's an advisory). Blue and
yellow, sounds like the Standard Life staff bus.

The 20mph advisory signs were removed about 2 years ago

Sounds like CityLink - and, yes, they shift all right, given half a chance. I
think that's the moral of this particular tale: keep in mind the different
forms of wildlife in the territory you're crossing and act accordingly in each
case.
