Took a spin around on the quad last night to knock off a few rabbits and 
notice the little beggars are multiplying again.

Which led me on to think of ferretting (probably not now but certainly next 
season).

Who was the plonker who decided purse nets should be brown? And is it 
possible to get white ones? Better still, I'd like them in fluorescent 
orange!

For those who don't follow my logic, here goes. Rabbits usually come out of 
holes when ferretted, so they see the net against the sky. So they ought to 
be light coloured, not dark. After use, I want to retrieve ALL the nets, so 
it would be nice to be able to find them! Why orange? Well, most animals 
are colour blind so the nets will be more visible to me but not to the 
rabbits. Does that make sense?

Now, where can I get 'em? This one has annoyed me for years and it needs to 
be sorted!!

You've opened a can of worms! :)

 From my experience, net colour makes little difference to the out come. 
My preference is hemp and not nylon which tangles at every possible 
opportunity. Hemp has it's draw backs though.

I can remember a debate on the subject of net colour, white being the 
most logical but again, green or brown works perfectly well, mainly 
because a rabbit has a hard time seeing directly in front.
I use "red plastic" pegs for most of my ferreting (not that I have done 
much of late), these pegs are light weight and very visable, combined 
with "counting the nets out" I have only once lost a net.
On the subject of making your own. Purse nets are easy to make and there 
are many companies who make general purpose nets in all sorts of colours 
and weights. A roll of para-cord and a couple of rings from the game 
fair is all you need. Last time I made nets, they cost me about 30p each 
all in!

Again, don't get too hung up on the colour of nets, after all you will 
be working with a fair bit of light on your side.

I get hung up on the colour because brown is just plain stupid. And I DO 
lose the brown ones!

I had a full set of brushed nylon years ago and they were great. Then I 
lent them to someone, complete with the best ferret I'd had for a long 
time, and did not get them back. Fortunately for him, the thief moved out 
of the area.

Yes, I seem to remember a long debate in Countryman's Weakly about nets 
which got a bit involved, finally ending up with violently opposing sides 
arguing about the odd micron in mesh size!!<g>

I feel old now thanks Derry , you reminded me of Jack Hargreaves
demonstrating the art of making purse nets which I taped on my spanking  new
betamax video so that I could always refer to it (that was plan A) luckily
there are still helpful folk about so have a look at

Everyone laughs at my dog leads. They are bright fluorescent orange. I got 
fed up with people at field trial pinching them -- and also losing them 
when out training. If you see anyone with some of the same colour, they are 
MINE!!!!<g>
