OT Strange Phonecall re Carribean Holiday
Phone rang this afternoon, then on to an automated message to say I had won
a Carribean holiday and to press 9. I hung up as I can't recall enetering a
comp of this nature and I am ex-directory. I always leave a mobile number.
Anyone else had this?

If they need to contact me and it's genuine, they will write!

I had this as well. Put the phone down on them. Knew it was a scam. Had one
not long ago about a mobile phone as well.

Re: OT Strange Phonecall re Carribean Holiday/silent calls
I know it's a scam, but it begs the question where they get the number from?
Moon-Shadow is ex-directory. This has happened to me too, calling on my
brand new BT line, the number for which I've only gave to *one* site last
week - the Sun! The number is ex-directory. So, is the Sun giving
away/selling numbers, or are the numbers randomly generated?

I saw an article in the newspaper this week about a company getting fined
for doing this because some of the calls don't connect when you pick up the
phone (silent calling) - this also happens to me sometimes (twice yesterday)
and is most frustrating when you've rushed to the phone to answer it. If you
can't prevent these calls by being ex-directory what can you do?

They are randomly generated. ICSTIS is getting more and more
complaints about companies using automatic dialling services to
promote scams. Being ex directory or belonging to the TPS doesn't
bother the callers - they are either outside or on the verge of the
law anyway. If you've managed to get the caller's number you can
report it here

http://www.icstis.org.uk/

Yesterday I fell for a scam I'd not heard of before - I got a missed
call on my mobile - which surprised me as it hadn't rung - and when I
looked at the details it appeared to be from a normal number starting
with 07 so I called back.

I got a recorded voice saying "Please be patient, we are trying to
connect you with the person who called you..." - at that point I
realised it was a scam and put the phone down. Then I checked my phone
account and for that 3 or 4 second call I had been charged 23p. If I'd
hung on while they spent several minutes "trying to connect me" it
could have cost me a fortune.

The ICSTIS complaints form says that numbers starting with 07 are not
premium rate ones and they have no jurisdiction over them, so this
must be a new scam that uses a premium rate number but somehow
disguises it.

only if they involve Premium rate (09xx) numbers, Jane.

Yes, as I have just found out - the scam I am trying to report took me
to a premium rate number that is somehow masquerading as a normal
number. I don't know how they did it, but it is impossible to report
it on the ICSTIS site.

Did you 1471? Because if you're ex-dir, and receiving automated calls
you can report the buggers.

I got one at the weekend, and every time I put the phone down it rang
again and the message started again. That carried on for a few
minutes, after which I dialled 1471 only to be told "We do not have
the caller's number"

Theb***rs think of everything.

Automated message machines are set to dial a range of numbers, and if
answered deliver their pre-recorded message. Essentially, they just
"walk" through segments of the total of all potential 'phone numbers.
I imagine, although I don't know, that batches are selected by exchange
and area demographics.

First port of call is your telephone service supplier's complaints
department to see if they can trace the call back, and lodge a formal
complaint.

These are annoying me - at least one a day would come through on my 1571
answering service and as it's obviously programmed to start talking at
answer, it's not paid attention to the fact the BT lady is talking first
and the message starts half way through.
I've de-activated 1571 for a while since nobody else ever leaves
messages and I'm fed up of deleting the damn things.
