New service! - competition alerts by text message
Hi - I hope this posting is of interest! I write SMS (text message)
applications and I've just launched a brand new service for all UK
mobile phone customers.
Every day, my application searches the internet for new competitions
with prizes such as cars, holidays, computers, sports tickets etc etc.
This information is then sent by text message to your mobile phone.
The text message tells you what the prize is, who is running the
competition, and the website details where you can get more information
or enter the competition.
If you want to join this service, just text the word TEN to the
shortcode number 80806. Already, several hundred people have signed
up!
Important information!
You must be at least 16 years old to join this service, and you need to
get the permission of whoever pays the mobile phone bill.
Each text message costs 150p, and only 1 text message is sent to you
each day.
You can leave this service immediately by texting the word STOP to
80806.
If you want more details, you can call our information line on 0870
0801734. (That is NOT a premium-rate number!). It's charged at 6p/min
peak and 3p/min weekends from a BT landline. But you do need to check
if your mobile network charges you to call an 0870 number.
This is a genuine and useful service, but if you have any concerns or
questions, please text TEN HELP to 80806. You will get a reply with
our customer support email address.
Good luck! - Simon

Re: New service! - competition alerts by text message
£1.50 a day for information you can get here for free - I know which I prefer.
For someone writing SMS applications, I would have expected you to have your own website and e-mail domain rather than a yahoo e-mail address !
I don't think this one's not for me.
However, maybe you could entice people by posting some examples of the SMS messages here for a few days to allow people to decide if the service is worthwhile.

Re: New service! - competition alerts by text message
Hi Paul
Well, its a question of whether you have the time to search the web, or
even whether you have easy access to the internet. For many people,
it's a small price to pay to get this type of information quickly.
I have a number of websites on my own server (the company site being
www.jungletelecom.com), but I always use a yahoo email address. This
minimises the risk of anyone hacking into my mail server to send out
spam. And I can easily change my Yahoo address if I'm the target of
spam emails :)
cheers - Simon
PS - I've been writing SMS applications for about 8 years, and it's my
sole business!

1.50 per day or 10.50 per week or 42 per month to get information which
is freely available here for nothing and on sites like Loquax and Comps.org
and Uk wins etc. and you expect us to believe that hundreds have signed up
for such a service!!!!
Well in that case I'm a Chinaman and the winner of tonight's lottery!!!

Re: New service! - competition alerts by text message
How about giving us a days sample of the comps you are posting. It would allow us to see how good the service us.

Hi Eric
Congratulations on winning the lottery!!
And you are wrong about the company accounts! I live in Bangkok,
Thailand and Jungle Telecom is registered 'offshore' (because I pay no
tax in the UK). The company details you looked at are for a
non-trading company :)

Re: New service! - competition alerts by text message
maybe i am wrong,
but i would guess most compers don't like spending money;
and when they do spend, they want value for money.
if it were 10p a text it would not interest me
surely you should tell the competition promoters
of your scheme, get them to pay you to promote
their competitions, then you could text us for free!
promoters are happy
you are happy
and compers are happy

Your website has nothing but sex lines. I ask again can you prove that
'hundreds' of people have signed up for your competition service?

Re: New service! - competition alerts by text message
Hi Stefan, thanks for the advice! But I know that usewr-groups are
often inhabited by no-hopers and moaners :)
Eric, you are perfectly entitled to your own opinions. I posted news
about this service because it might be of interest to news-group
readers. Certainly, most of my customers do not have regular access to
the internet, so for them this is a useful service.
As for value for money, value is what someone considers it is worth.
You think this service has little value whilst many others think it has
value.
There is zero reason for me wanting to prove to you how many customers
I have :) Will that prove persuade you to sign up? I think not.
Anyway, this is all getting OT...
Have a happy day - Simon

If you've posted here before. you'll be aware that Steffy is the king of
moaners and no-hopers - he's made it an art form! Taking advice from him is
NOT recommended

_____
The text message tells you what the prize is, who is running the

i.e. if most of your customers do not have regular access to the internet,
what use are website details of competitions for these people?

Hi Paul, you are missing the plot, but only a little :)
Many of my customers do not have regular access to the internet, so
that's why they join this sms service. If they get information about
an interesting competition then they go and visit the website, using
access from an internet cafe or library.
Not everyone is glued to the web like you and me!
