If you read the whole thread instead of starting near the end when so
many helpful people had done all the hard work you might find it.

Now now Stefan, posting the url yourself would have been kinder and more helpful, and wouldn't lay you open to charges of "Well you're just as unhelpful!"

I did read the whole thread, here is the base note. Note there are no
references: in the header indicating previous articles.

If people start new threads rather than using followup, it is very
difficult to follow the thread. I have a threaded newsreader (and 18
years experience of using usenet)

*sigh* wouldn't it be lovely if some of the people who devoted their
time and energy to criticising others who are trying to be helpful
devoted some of that time and energy to being helpful themselves.

I too have a threaded newsreader. It took me just a few seconds to
find the original thread. Compare that to the time it took the
posters in both threads to find the answers to the clues. Do you
really expect them to go back to the original message and find the URL
to quote it every time just to save you a few seconds? When you appear
to have no intention of looking for any answers yourself?

How about showing a bit of gratitude for all the time that they have
saved you rather than the insignificant amount of time you consider
them to have wasted? Those clues were very tough - I had spent an hour
wrestling with them myself before seeing the answers had been posted
here (and realising I'd submitted a wrong answer).

Quite. If people had supplied the original reference I might have found
it.

No, because I don't use URLs to access usenet. Like the people who used
usenet in the decade or so before the web arrived, I use article IDs

Actually it's not that simple, the original article had expired so going
back isn't as easy as you suggest. However, knowing what to look for
including an article ID would allow me to re-request it from the news
server.

Oh, the good old days! I used to live in a paper bag in't middle o't
road...... Naturally all of us who use new fangled technology are in
the wrong and we should slink away from usenet and leave it to the
geeks.

99.9% of us on this group live in the 21st century. I don't know about
the others but I neither know nor care what an article ID is and I'm
certainly not about to find out just to save you the effort of solving
some crosswords clues.

Thanks Mary - only just made it to the 3pm post yesterday, so I was
hoping most copies would arrive today ready for people to get stuck in
to them over the weekend.
