Smoking Ban
Apparently 150 pubs will close in Scotland due to the smoking ban, this is
based on figures from Ireland.

Already a bar in Huntley has closed because it started a non smoking policy
and JD Wetherspoons have announced a profit warning on their division that
has also banned smoking.

I think what will happen is a lot of wee local pubs will shut.

And the ones that can survive will only open at Lunch time and at night,
like it used to be.

As long as it's 150 crap pubs, or pubs that I don't frequent, then who
cares!?!

Quite right too, I feel like taking that cig and sticking up their arse when
I can't breath because of the disgusting and ignorant habit.

Ban smoking EVERYWHERE I say...
I know, tax money, blah blah blah...heard it all before...

it was pretty dumb to start a no smoking policy unless it is universal
otherwise punters just go somewhere else. It takes a while to make the
transition to a new set of customers.

I am sure that some pubs will close but there are things that can be done to
ease the situation for smokers. Being a non smoker myself I hate sitting in
smoky pubs and would welcome a ban as I avoid going to pubs mostly because
of the smoke.

A partial solution and I emphasize partial because this won't apply to every
pub and our climate doesn't help either but pubs can buy (and are buying)
outdoor tables and chairs. Also there are large folding canopies on the
market to protect people from the rain when sitting outside. These canopies
are used a lot on the continent already even on main streets.

I am sure there are other solutions as well but the main point I am making
is that it is up to publicans to make good creative decisions and not give
up at the first hurdle so to speak. I know a bit about this as I have a
friend who works in this area of business and many publicans/hoteliers are
starting to make plans for the ban coming in.

It isn't fair to inflict smoke on non smokers especially bar staff as it
definitely isn't good for you.

Re: Smoking Ban
Here is more fat for the fire.

All you vehement anti smokers, what do you do instead of going to stinky
pubs?

And after the pubs become non-stinky, will you start to frequent them? Or
will you continue to do what you do?

I think if I was a non pub person, I would continue to do my thing anyway.

maybe but the real issue is the health of BAR staff. Have you no
consideration for these people? I don't mind smokers damaging their own
health but I think it is arrogant in the extreme to affect the health of
others.

I probably will go to the pub more often if smoking is banned I'm not sure.
