Re: can anyone tell me please...
Sometimes I'm getting a message saying Google can't find the original
message - although I've just been reading it! So I have to start again
to reply.
You'll gather I still haven't figured out how to download the
newsgroups to my new computer. Port 119 seems to be blocked, but I've
been down there with me rods and poked about a bit and can't find
anything. Maybe I should try DynoRod...

New version of firewall recently installed. Everything seems to be in
order, and I can't find anything that might be blocking download.
There's always something, isn't there?

Tha's not using MAee or N0rt0n cacka are thee? Temp'rarily enable your XP
firewall and disable your new one if so. Try again. In case I missed it do
you read news thru' OE or what? As you are using broadband have you made
sure that you are downloading news ONLY via your *broadband* server? They
don't like you using alternative gateways.
Write me offlist if you're still stuck.

Open a command prompt window and try:
telnet news.individual.net 119
You should get:
200 The server welcomes <your ip address>. Authorization required for
reading and posting.
If you that port 119 isn't blocked... type quit to get back to the
command prompt. If you don't get a response try:
tracert news.individual.net
That may give a hint at where things are getting stopped but the
results are bit variable depending on the configuration of routers
within the internet/your ISP.

Well it means you can connect and talk to the German news server that
I and a lot of other people use. Not free any more but well worth
£7/year IMHO.

What closed, disappeared from the task bar? Donno what would cause
that but that's windoze for you, have an error, display a message but
close the window before anyone can read it...
It may indicate that you haven't got the name absolutely right or that
you have been given the wrong one to use and it is not recognising you
as a legitimate connection and thus closing it.

What did you get to start with? Something maybe blocking the tracert
probes. You could try "ping <news server>" but again those can be
filtered in the internet.

Thanks Dave. I've tried that, and got the "200 the server....." message
just as you quoted it. Does this mean port 119 isn't blocked, then?
I tried the same thing using the address for my own news server, and
after a few seconds the dos window just vanished. So I tried the
tracert command and I'm now getting 'Request timed out' messages.
Fascinating stuff, but what would you suggest next?

Re: can anyone tell me please...
I can't believe this. Having spoken at length to a so-called tech
person on the phone the other day, who failed to help me at all, I now
find that the particular account I've got doesn't give me usenet
access. Grrrr.. I wouldn't have signed up for this one if I'd known,
but it's not exactly obvious - took a lot of digging on their website.
I could upgrade for a fee, but I'd rather avoid more expense if I can.
Oh well... where did people say I could go for free usenet access
again?

Well it does but not from their servers... Remember you just
successfully telnet'd to news.individual.net.

Bung "free news server" into google and take you pick... There are
loads but how reliable, fast, or stable they are is another matter. It
might be worth taking a read of alt.free.newsservers (via google or
WHY) to see what common ones are used and problems etc.
