Goodbye And Thanks For All The Fish
Arrived home Saturday evening.
Yesterday was a restful day. Went to see Hitchhiker's Guide...
last night. Not bad. A nice meal out afterwards with the family.
But now it's back to work.
Oh well. It had to end sometime.

At the 'Restaurant At The End Of The Universe' by any chance??
My nephew was down here recently and we watched the original TV series which
I have on video. Don't know if you saw that but was wondering how they
compare?

Huh.... I haven't had a day off in 19 years.... :(

Great to meet you bud. We'll do it at your place next time as discussed.

Sorry. Didn't see the TV series. I read the book so long ago it
was practically all new to me again.

You definitely need a break.

The pleasure was all mine. You didn't let me buy you a pint so
we will definitely have to do it again. This side of the pond
works for me.

nobody is going to turn up for a boink in Norway until we can be assured
that your veranda on the 6th floor is not going to collapse and send us

I have received a letter telling me what they are going to do.Honest.
Trouble is, the one who was to come and do the job is sick. Well, that's
what they say. Last year someone who was sick came back onto the 'drain' job
all bronzed and looking fit has a fiddle, so I'll believe it when I see it.
The verandahs are safe. They just don't drain at all.
Don't fret. When the blasted things are done there'll be a boink here and
you'd better find someone to look after your cat.
I wonder if the beech tree is called a hanging birch. The trunk is silver and
black. At the moment it has lambs' tails hanging on it's hanging branches so
the rain water on the veranda has a yellow pollen film. Next it's a shower
of one type of seeds and then a shower of another type of seeds (???) then
it's all the leaves, flying bugs and the seagulls squawking and hitting the
branches with their wings to smoke them out and then it's winter again. The
tree is massive and quite beautiful. A practful example.

The black/white/silver bark and the lamb's-tail catkins sound more like
a birch. Beeches have little spherical appendages*, which dangle in
pairs. Later in the year, birches shed small seeds with papery 'wings"
for aerial distribution, while the beeches have prickly, thick-skinned
nuts** which fall to the ground and are much loved by squirrels.

My Norwegian maple is chucking little yellowy flowers all over my car at
the moment, bunging up all the crevices and windscreen washers and wipers.

These ones are definitely hanging down in pairs. Some of the pairs have a
big one in the middle and in some places they hang in clusters. This tree
throws off two different kinds of seeds into my open sandwiches. It's a
Silver Hanging Birch but I believe it's either twa sexed or it's been around
the block more than once. Gees, it's a bu88a. I'm on the 4th floor-here- no
ground floor-garages under the building and the tree is much higher than the
building. There were a couple of wood pigeons in it this morning. Looked to
me like they were eating something from the branches. I believe it's a bit
too early and cold for the small black flying beetles. They usually land in
my flower pots.

Re: Goodbye And Thanks For All The Fish
You know, now I see this on a proper screen (rather than google groups) I
can see that this is a slight misquotation- it's, "so long, and thanks for
all the fish". But then again, you never actually claimed to be quoting
anything, did you?
The movie itself was a bit curate's-egg-ish. I liked Arthur; I didn't like
Ford Prefect - nothing racist about this, it's just that the original
character sounded so English - this American actor, great though he may be
in other movies, is just plain wrong. Having said that, he did pretty well
considering the miscasting. I more or less approved of the treatment of
Trillain, who was a totally pointless character in the original, and played
by an actress with a very silly voice on the TV series. The new version is a
vast improvement - she becomes a real person with a real personality.
Zaphod, now... I have to admit this, even on a public forum like this - I
used to have a bit of a thing for him on the original Radio 4 series.
Mmm..... "Two heads are better than one...." Mmm.... (Well, I was young &
innocent in those days you know....) Oh well. This new version of Zaphod was
completely over the top - all his intelligence and humour was lost. No
wonder the new Trillian left him for Arthur. She wouldn't have left the
original Zaphod, who was the king of cool.
So... apart from missing out several really important one-liners and other
bits of the story, and introducing a dreadful song, it wasn't too bad, I
suppose. I didn't hate it. I didnt' love it either, though. It could - and
should - have been so much better. It nearly got it right. Too many
Americans in a very English bit of humour, I guess.
If you haven't seen it, do go. If you have no experience of any of the
earlier versions though, it may make absolutely no sense at all.
ally
PS - oh yes, and Slartibartfast wasn't nearly old enough either....

I seem to remember that Trillian was played by Sandra Dickinson, who, if
I remember rightly, is American! She always had a funny voice.

Why, of course, Ally. I do believe Ally's right, Johnny.
There's a clear and distinct difference between "whether" and "weather",
and "why" and "Wye", and "whither" and "wither" and "what" and "Watt",
(and a huge one between "whore" and "wore". The former always seems to
rhyme with "sewer", even when spoken by posh folks, and there's no "h"
sound at all.)

Superb. Short, yet direct, and with just the right balance of sincerity

Yes, you blu88y have to, along with the rest of you awful people who have
boinks without me.Suppose I could ask them. Gees, that trip is welded into
my mind with distaste. Everything went wrong, even coming to the ship just
to watch it sail out without us. Gawd, I could have killed. That was a
Friday. We could have stayed until Monday morning and get free passage but
the band said - no way - they had to be at work Monday morning, so we had to
pay 100 each, extra, nobody had a dime left except Orly who paid for us all
and we paid him later. I hate bands. The ship docked in Bergen and we had a
12 hour drive with two in the back seat drinking beer and psing on every
stone all the way over the mountains.. Uff!, I don't feel well...journey
took twice as long as it should. The Sunday boink at The Black Bull was
absolutely super. Thank you all for coming. You are OK.
Edith.
ps. I'll ask them if they want to come over again later. They do but it's
those durned holiday cottages that bring the price up, especially during
high season. Those holiday cottages are lovely but 400/700 a week. Guh!
Orly's van is on it's last lap too so................??????????????

He wears lined drawers, you know, with G string, thou why he has them lined

Ours too. We took it in for service and the estimate was far
more than the selling price so we said 'no thanks'. We bought a
new vehicle last evening. Small, versatile and very fuel
efficient. Not large enough for a band like the old one was so
please do not visit.

It was a typographical error. I wrote "w" instead of "h". Over tea with
the Minister, one might pronounce it "Woman of Ill Repute," otherwise
it's "hoor", with a very distinct, rolling 'r' sound.
The simple test for the aspirate "wh" is to hold the back of one's hand
in front of one's mouth. Then, if "witch" is spoken aloud, there is a
gentle expulsion of air from between the widening lips at the start of
the vowel sound. When "which" is pronounced, there is a strong current
of air expelled through tightly pursed lips to produce the aspirate
"wh", as if one were trying to blow away dust.
(It was actually included in the advice given at an in-service seminar
on the teaching of (American) English pronunciation for volunteer tutors
who teach English to Speakers of Other Languages, which I attended last
year, so they do it here, too.)

I discovered last night, after discussing all this stuff here, that Steve, a
100% English person, only misses *some* of his "wh..." sounds. He started
off by confusing me, after reading a book on evolution, by mentioning "Wales
with legs". I responded that all the Welsh people I'd ever met had legs,
though I supposed there might be a few who were sometimes legless. But no,
it turned out he was referring to the ancestral whale - a mammal which
walked back into the sea and eventually, after several million years afloat,
morphed into our modern leg-free whale.
Having sorted that out, I said something else, (I forget what - it doesn't
really matter), to which he responded, "Why?" That was "why" not "wy" you
notice. This English person managed a perfectly respectable "wh..." sound in
this case. So far as I can see he also pronounces the "wh.." in other short
words like "what".
So all you non-Scots out there - try saying things like, "what - where -
why" and then "whales - which - white" and see if you, or whoever else
happens to be around, can detect a difference.
....Wheeee!....

Edith there are rumours that a tunnel (rather like the one across the
English Channel) is to be built between Norway and Newfoundland in 2006,
the Nunnel as it will be known, will connect both countries and provide
for both tourists and commerce.
Once built you will be able to drive from Norway straight over to Canada
with a stopover in Grimsby at the soon-to-be-built International Ma
Hubbard Gateway and Cockle Shop. A journey of less than 7 hours (46
hours in a Kia/Suzuki/Rover). Apparently sections of the Nunnel will
have windows so that you can view the remaining 4 species of fish left
in the North Sea and the abandoned O'Donnells Underwater Wind Farm in
the Irish Sea. Don't know what the cost will be for a single journey but
probably quite expensive.
Alternatively you could get on an aeroplane.
Helpful regards, Lou.

This is good news. Except once in Newfie, you will still need to
take a ferry to mainland Canada which will cost extra.

Obviously!! For goodness sake, this is hardly helpful but instead just
common sense - she would hardly be likely to swim across would she? I
strongly believe that this would be a super forum if people didn't
patronise other contributors in such an appalling manner.
Disgusted regards, Lou
PS: You've spelt Newfoundland incorrectly, I would suggest that you buy
a dictionary and look this word up. Under 'n'.

Yeah - just checked Ryanair's site and it seems to be about 40 per person
return which is cheaper than taking the train to London. Blimey. That's
cheap. Mind you I haven't looked into all the extras you have to pay for,
but it's certainly affordable. No excuse for all us UK-based uklcers not to
visit Edith en masse, is there?
So when are Orly's bands most active then? I might seriously think of

price of a pint here is disgusting. In other words, by a bottle of vodka in
tax free and keep topping your pint and we can stay there until closing
time, 3 am when, by then, we will probably be a liquidized puddle on the
tiled floor where they can sweep us out.

I was speaking to a woman (in Long Island NY) on Saturday whose art
student daughter has just spent a term at University in Florence. She
was singing the praises of Ryanair, which had enabled her to fly all
over Europe for very low fares.

That's probably the alternative answer to Life, the Universe and
Everything. (I'm not sure if the current cinema version of The Guide
goes into this.)
I remember when we couldn't get the car to start on a winter's morning
without a good spray of WD40 on the sparkplugs. I also got pretty good
at jump-starting it. There was a never-ending source of spare parts in
the scrapyard down the road. When something goes wrong these days, it
always involves paying someone else a lot of money to do something with
some specialist equipment.

That's why I mentioned a long weekend of not more than a week. You need
pocket money in every pocket. Gawd let us into the union and befree us from
greedy governments. They'r sitting on 30 million krones of oil money and
closing schools and hospitals and old peoples homes etc etc etc. Human
rights issues are being quietly swept under the carpet and everyone is lay
back, never mind until one day...........

Yeah but if I've saved so much on the fare I might just have enough left for
an ice cream or a wee souvenir of a miniature fjord to take home. And I'll
start saving up now for a coffee.

We have a tiny coffee shop on a corner that makes espresso and fancy stuff.
I never get that far up high street. It's so small that I prefer to sit
outside when it's warm, which is two weeks of the year.

Remember 26th May they start on my biggest verandah.
17th May is partying everywhere here. It's a nightmare. You can't find a seat
to sit down in any of the pubs and cafes.Orlando and I usually do a bunk.I
hate that day. It's sandwiches and off out into the country for us. My
grandchildren walk procession from their school to the park in town to
listen to the Mayor hold his annual speech, yeh, I, right and back to the
sound of brass bands among with all the other schools and
organizations--uff, it's awful, hundreds of children in their fancy best
clothes and everyone fiffed up and the students go crazy with their red
overalls and hats and the ones that study economy have blue overalls and
blue hats, ohmygawd-you might just like it and everyone waves the Norwegian
flag and shouts huraaaaaah blu88yell.

Hey, every nation needs the occasional National Day Of Daftness, you know!
Even in Wukkington everyone goes bonkers once a year and chases a wee ball
up and down the town. You can't convince me that's any less daft than what
the Norwegians get up to.

Norway Experience Guide of Oslo - May 17'th - Oslo Norway
Constitution day - Grunnlovens dag - Independence Day
17th of May
The United States has the 4th of July as its National Day commemorating the
American Declaration of Independence. The French celebrate the 14th of July
in memory of the storming of the Bastille and the downfall of l'ancien
regime. The 17th of May is Norway's National Day. In the history of Norway,
17 May 1814 marks both the country's declaration of independence and the
triumph of constitutional government. In order to understand the dominant
place occupied by the celebration of the 17th of May in the national
consciousness it is necessary to view it against its historical background.

Oh, I don't know. Lots of balls get kicked 17th May in Norway. I've been

Huh? Where's this site then? I like the sound of that though. I could waltz

a native Scot I could show them the *right* way to do an eightsome reel, and

I'm more for Brunch, Crunch and Punk. I used to be a rocker but they mixed
that into summet else too.Me dad could do an Ireland fling and me Mam could
do the skaters waltz but I never got past tripping over me left foot so I
kept to tapping me triangle out of rhythm. It was awful.

I love your overflowing enthusiasm, String Bean. You'll go a long way with
that.
and now I can give you all some very good news. The workers are starting on
my verandah 23rd instead of 26th. Isn't that wonderful? I knew you would
appreciate me giving you the good news.I shall be sure to let you all know
if there should be any changes in plan because I know you are all waiting
just as eagerly has I. (especially Al :)
BTW May I live with one of you while they do the job, please.? It's going to
be awfully noisy and messy. I'll bring a tin of biscuits.

Re: Goodbye And Thanks For All The Fish
You are wasting your time posting here because < uk.local.*> news
groups, all of them, have been from the very beginning and will be to
the very end safe play areas for all sorts of raging nutters, social
malcontents, control freaks and malevolent beings.
You may feel that they should go elsewhere but where? The asylums
are all closed. Every so often they stop taking their medication and
go off their fucking heads. What would you have of them? Standing in
their back yards at midnight howling to the full moon and frightening
the shit out of the neighbours into the bargain? Have them running
around shafting masons, suspected vampires, werewolves, communists,
socialists, conservatives and women with vaginal warts by the dozen?
OR harmlessly making utter cunts of themselves in a uk.local group?
Lets face it what is one other cunt amongst the many in this group?? I
know what I prefer!!
The uk.local hierarchy of newsgroups is a valuable safety valve which
helps to keep society a wee bit more safe.
You may disagree. I would be interested to hear your opinion and no
doubt would the rest of the group. Thanks in advance.

My memory sucks. Although the other night, someone asked who
wrote The Chrysalids and 'John Whyndham' immediately popped out
of my mouth after nearly forty years of not thinking about it at
all. Must have a short-term memory problem more than long term.

Aha! So you forgot I'd given you detailed directions to the place? Hmm...
you did mention a bit of a worry about the old short-term memory. And at

This was a problem with my hired car, too. I drove all the way from
Manchester airport to Burton services with my rear onside window
slightly ajar, after attempting to open the driver's window to put a
ticket in the Car Rental parking garage barrier.
However, your attempts were ultimately successful. I was surprised that
you first encountered a young male who did not know the location of one
of the hostelries in the area.

No! I'm not! Haven't you noticed that the Scots are one of the few races who

Wales, and we know which witch is which! Tell him, JP, please - he doesn't
