Car Dealers
Morning all,
My son wants to buy another car. He has 3000 and a trade in. Does anyone
have any car dealers in the Lothians to recommend we try, or steer clear
off.
Thanks

Stay clear of Arnold Clark. Not just in the Lothians. I found this site
after I had bought my car. I really wish I'd seen it before!

On the other hand my last three cars have come from Arnold Clark and
I've had no problems whatsoever. There's always two sides.

I have had my last four cars from Arnold Clark and they have all been
reliable particularly the most recent one. I have a friend who bought a
Peugot from their Tollcross garage which didn't go so well, but that garage
has closed now. My dealings have been with their Nissan branch at Seafield
Road and the Honda branch in Kirkcaldy.

My experience with cars has taught me that Japanese cars are generally
reliable having had six over the years. Honda are one of the best and Which
magazine usually has Honda near or at the top of their lists. My last three
have been Hondas and the only thing that went wrong was the ignition coil on
the first one. This was replaced (cost 129) and then six months later Honda
wrote me to say there was a recall on the same part.

I wrote to them and said it had been replaced earlier and sent a copy of the
receipt and asked them to refund the cost. They agreed right away and sent a
cheque in the post by return. I was impressed. I doubt if all companies
would do this. HTH.

This thread makes point I've generally worked to. You are buying a car.
If not new, get it checked by someone such as AA or RAC. If new, confirm
it has full manufacturers warranty. If something goes wrong with that
and there is slightest sign of delay from supplier, get trading
standards involved. Salesmen are like politicians - some of them cannot
get by without telling lies. Treat them as someone who wants the most
money for the least effort and do not get friendly with them. I've used
this attitude for a long while and it has won me few friends but I have
never had a problem getting my money's worth in anything I buy.

I have had a similarly experience with Nissan. My first was a Sunny
120Y which was badged Datsun. Having had every version of Sunny
and Micra since I can honestly say the experience being
satisfactory.

I just wished Nissan would introduce a diesel Micra. :-)

Agreed - My mum's Nissan Almera (currently on semi-permanent loan to me) is
now 6 years old and it has needed no work done at all until the most recent
MOT in Feb this year. Coincidentally the exhaust pipe died just before the
MOT but it had lasted 42500 miles without incident before it gave up. It's
also very forgiving to drive and is generally well behaved in company :o)
