Broadband! Hurrah!
Well, I've joined the broadband revolution at last. What fun!
Everything is very fast, and because we can still use the phone while
I'm online I feel as though I've suddenly added a couple of extra hours
to the day.
Mind you, although setting up the adsl connection was easy, I can't get
me damn newsgroups to download, although I've read the instructions
very carefully and seem to be doing everything as instructed. I shall
phone them tomorrow, but in the meantime I'm using the Google groups
website to access usenet. Haven't tried this since the days of Deja
News... I'm hoping it comes out correctly!

Hope you have got your firewall turned on...
Where are you trying to get news from? Do you get any useful error
messages or just a typical windows "I can't do it, but I'm not going
to tell you why" thing.

Unless you've changed your browser/client, there shouldn't be any
difference in the method you use to access it.

Re: Broadband! Hurrah!
Well I've changed everything - that's the trouble. New computer, new
operating system, new isp - the lot. The old PC is still here, and I
have to keep swapping the monitor between the two of them at the
moment, and will go on doing until I've got all my files etc
transferred across, and I could still get online with the old one
using dial-up if I wanted, but I'm trying to get the new one set up
just now.
The tecchy guy on the phone thought something was blocking my port 119
but even disabling my firewall & virus checker made no difference. Any
ideas? Where do the more independant people get their newsgroups now,
anyway? That German site started charging people - where do you go
now?
Anyway Kezzi - the answer is yes, please, send me the pix. And no,
Edith, they're not dirty photies, though I guess it's possible you
might be in some of them!

Anyone wanting to email - my old address is still valid. Don't use the
yahoo one I'm using here - I never check it.

Telenor have bought up Tiscali. They'll do anything to stop anyone from
getting anything cheaper or for free. They can break the laws boikotting
because they are so economically powerfull that they just pay their finds
and bu883er everyone else, especially the little folk. Someone should shove
a stick--up---in their spokes.

That was below the belt. How are your big green knickers then? Anyhow, you
didn't get that shot of me under the table. Pot luck. :P

Gone through with a fine tooth comb checking for typos in all the
config dialogues? Tried changing to something different, saving,
checking it's remembered the new setting and then change it back?

The german site... news.individual.net EU10/year (approx £7) is well worth it for a fast, well connected, reliable and supported news
service. One group I was in got seriously spammed the other month,
they blocked the postings (comming it at several 100's/hr) after a
couple of hours other news services let the whole lot through, well
over 10,000 posts.

Hi, Dave
Do they take Credit Card payments? Their letter to me wasn't very clear
about it. For the time being I'm using my ISP's in-house news server,
and, when I'm not at home, I'm looking in through Google Groups.

Yes via a third party e-commerce provider. The only thing I don't like
is the fact they set up a regular, annual, debit rather than a one off
payment then sending renewal notices. I can see the reasons, costs and
admin load, from processing the renewal notices or fielding the "my
news has stopped working emails", when people fail to renew. The
latter probably being the most expensive.

I've got a tiscali account, but it's only a pay-as-you-go one that I
use to soak up spam on my websites so I'm not that bothered about it.
It seems to work ok, and it doesn't let most of the spams through
anyway, so I've no complaints and I don't really care who owns it. I
didn't use them for my broadband connection.

Huh? You mean you'd rather be in them if they *were* dirty photos?
Well, I'm sure we could set something up for your next visit. I used
to know a guy who did porn photography...
My big green knickers are getting too big for me, Edith - I'm losing
weight. I need a belt to hold them up these days. Would you like my
spare pair?

It's the monopol of it. They swallow up their contesters.....but it's
getting better. If we could only get into a united Europe.
